Appointment Type: This is a Temporary Exempt (TEX) appointment, not to exceed 1,040 hours. This position is excluded by the Charter from the competitive Civil Service examination process and shall serve at the discretion of the Appointing Officer.

Time Commitment: Eight (8) weeks from June 22, 2026 to August 14, 2026.

Hours: Thirty two (32) hours per week, Monday through Friday, between 8:00am and 5:00pm

To maximize this training opportunity, Interns may request no more than five (5) business days for vacation, summer school, or other activities during the duration of the internship.

Interns must attend required workshops, trainings, and orientation sessions.

Established in 1980 by the Airport Commission, SFO Museum’s mission is to delight, engage, and inspire a global audience with programming on a broad range of subjects; to collect, preserve, interpret, and share the history of commercial aviation; and to enrich the public experience at San Francisco International Airport. The Museum has been accredited by the American Alliance of Museums since 1999 and retains the distinction of being the only accredited museum in an airport. The Museum operates more than twenty-five sites throughout the Airport terminals, including fourteen galleries that exhibit a rotating schedule of art, history, photography, science, and cultural exhibitions. Among the sites is the San Francisco Airport Commission Aviation Library and Louis A. Job Description

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has unique internship programs and hosts interns during the summer. Summer College Museum interns will work part-time, up to thirty-two (32) hours per week, for eight (8) weeks.

SFO Museum’s internship program gives enrolled college students an opportunity to gain experience and training in an accredited and unique museum venue.  The internship provides interns with preparatory training for entry to the museum profession. Behind-the-scenes experience, training sessions conducted by professional museum staff, and project assignments will introduce various skills and knowledge to help the intern determine a specific career path in museum studies.

SFO Museum interns are integrated into the Collections and Registration teams by providing assistance in close partnership with Museum staff on various projects that support the exhibitions program and permanent collections.  

The Collection summer interns assist with various projects within the Aviation Collection, including condition reporting, object digitization, data input and management, inventorying, the creation of archival storage containers, and the accessioning of incoming objects. The position may assist with exhibition installations and deinstallations. This work is done under supervision from a designated Museum staff member.

The Registration summer intern assists with various projects within the Registration Department, including condition reporting, object digitization, data input and management, assistance in loan pick up and drop off, the assistance in exhibition installation and deinstallation, and helping care for the permanent art installed in the Airport. This work is done under supervision from a designated Museum staff member.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Summer College Interns must be enrolled in majors of museum studies, history, art history or equivalent degree in a closely related fields at an accredited college or university in Fall 2026.
    • Must have completed at least two (2) years of college; equivalent to 60 semester units or 90 quarter units.

Selection Process: The selection process will include evaluating applications to ensure that candidates meet the minimum requirements.  Depending upon the number of candidates, SFO may establish and implement additional screening mechanisms to comparatively evaluate qualifications and only those applicants whose qualifications most closely meet the needs of SFO will be invited to interview.

  • Qualified candidates will be sent a Supplemental Questionnaire.  Candidates who do not complete and submit this questionnaire by the specified deadline will not receive further consideration for this internship program.

    NOTE:  Applicants who meet the minimum qualifications are not guaranteed advancement through all steps in the selection process.
