Job Description
The Field Service Technician is responsible for providing installation, preventive maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, retrofit, and emergency support services for electrical power distribution, control, and power generation systems. This role serves as a technical representative of MCG at customer sites and plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability, safety, and performance of customer equipment. The Field Service Technician works independently and collaboratively to diagnose and resolve electrical and control system issues, deliver exceptional customer service, and support aftermarket service growth. This position requires extensive travel, technical expertise, a commitment to safety, and the ability to effectively communicate with customers, vendors, and internal stakeholders. Success in this role is measured by technical proficiency, customer satisfaction, safety performance, quality of work, responsiveness, and contribution to service revenue growth.
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
The following list of responsibilities is not all inclusive, additional projects and/or tasks may be assigned to meet operational needs. MCG retains the right to change or assign other duties to this position should operational needs warrant.
- Perform installation, testing, calibration, and maintenance of low-, medium-, and high-voltage electrical equipment and control systems.
- Troubleshoot electrical, mechanical, control, PLC, generator, switchgear, relay, and power distribution systems.
- Conduct preventive and predictive maintenance inspections to maximize equipment reliability and uptime.
- Diagnose equipment failures and determine root causes using technical drawings, schematics, diagnostic tools, and testing equipment.
- Complete repairs, retrofits, upgrades, and equipment modifications in accordance with company and customer requirements.
- Respond to emergency service calls and provide on-call support as assigned.
Customer Service
- Build and maintain positive customer relationships through professional communication and technical expertise.
- Provide customers with recommendations for maintenance, repairs, upgrades, and operational improvements.
- Prepare service reports for documenting findings, corrective actions, recommendations, and parts utilized.
- Support service quoting activities through accurate field assessments and scope of development.
Safety and Compliance
- Adhere to all company, customer, OSHA, NFPA 70E, and applicable safety requirements.
- Conduct job hazard analysis and maintain safe work practices at all times.
- Utilize proper PPE and follow lockout/tagout procedures and electrical safety standards.
- Report safety concerns, incidents, and near misses promptly.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives that improve service quality, efficiency, and customer satisfaction.
Administrative Responsibilities
- Complete service documentation, expense reports, time sheets, and travel records accurately and timely.
- Maintain company tools, testing equipment, vehicles, and inventory in good working conditions.
- Participate in required training and certification programs.
Qualifications
Required Knowledge/Experience
- 3–5 years of field service, maintenance, or troubleshooting experience involving electrical power systems, generators, switchgear, controls, or industrial equipment.
- Experience in power generation, utilities, marine, oil and gas, manufacturing, or industrial environments preferred.
- Experience with PLC troubleshooting and electrical control systems preferred.
- Knowledge of electrical theory, power distribution systems, switchgear, generators, protective relays, and control systems.
- Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and technical manuals.
- Familiarity with PLC platforms such as Allen-Bradley, Siemens, Schneider, or similar systems.
- Proficiency using electrical test equipment including multimeters, insulation testers, and power quality analyzers.
- Strong troubleshooting and root cause analysis skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and service reporting software.
Education
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree in Electrical Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, Electronics Technology, or related field preferred.
- Technical trade school certification preferred.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- This is a FLSA non-exempt position paid on an hourly basis. Overtime may be required based on production demands, including extended shifts, weekends, or holidays.
- This role is based on the production floor. The position requires standing for extended periods, working around machinery, and adherence to all safety and compliance standards.
- Mobility: Ability to move around the manufacturing plant, including walking, standing, and climbing stairs.
- Manual Dexterity: Occasional use of hands to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls.
- Lifting: Ability to lift and carry items up to fifty (50) pounds. All lifting should be done following OSHA standards.
- Visual and Auditory Requirements: Must be able to see and hear well enough to navigate the plant safely and communicate effectively with team members.
