The Senior EDI Onboarding Resource / Senior EDI Engineer is responsible for the technical ownership, design, and governance of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) integrations with customers and business partners in EDIFACT, ANSiX12 or TRADACOM Standard.

Mattel operates an IBM iSeries (AS/400) system as its ERP backend. EDI data exchange is managed via the external EDI service provider OpenText (GXS), which exchanges APRF and SNRF files in UTF-8 format with the ERP system.

In this senior role, the EDI Engineer leads the design and implementation of complex EDI solutions in close collaboration with OpenText and internal stakeholders, Mattel Global EDI Delivery Manager. Responsibilities include defining technical EDI architecture, designing, and reviewing EDI mappings, managing, and validating mapping requests, coordinating, and executing integration and partner testing, and ensuring stable and compliant production deployments.

The Senior EDI Engineer acts as a technical escalation point for complex EDI issues, drives continuous improvement of EDI processes and standards, and provides technical guidance and mentoring to junior EDI resources.

Requirements

  • Extensive, hands-on experience with EDI standards and architectures, including ANSI X12, EDIFACT, TRADACOMS, and XML-based industry standards, across multiple versions and complex, partner-specific implementations - globally.
  • Deep technical understanding of EDI message structures, including envelopes, segments, elements, qualifiers, control numbers, acknowledgements, and compliance validation.
  • Understood the EDI Partner Setup Profile creation on iSeries Backend to extract and upload EDI Transactions.
  • Expert knowledge of EDI communication protocols and security concepts, including AS2, X.400, FTP, SFTP, certificates, encryption, and secure data transmission, with practical experience in UNIX / iSeries environments.
  • Strong expertise in character encoding, file formats, and data integrity, especially UTF-8, and structured flat-file processing
  • Advanced knowledge of standard EDI transaction types, including EDIFACT ORDERS, ORDCHG, DESADV, INVOICE etc. and full understanding of their ANSI X12 equivalents and cross-standard mappings 850, 855, 860, 856, 810.
  • Proven experience integrating EDI with ERP backend systems, preferably IBM iSeries / AS400, including high-volume inbound and outbound processing.
  • Expert-level experience in EDI mapping design and development, including complex transformations, conditional logic, validations, and error handling.
  • Ability to independently interpret and challenge EDI implementation guidelines, trading partner specifications, and business process requirements.
  • Strong experience leading end-to-end EDI onboarding projects, including partner coordination, requirement analysis, mapping development, testing strategy, go-live planning, and post-production stabilization.
  • Proven capability to analyze, troubleshoot, and resolve complex EDI issues across communication, mapping, application, and data layers.
  • Extensive experience working with external EDI service providers and B2B platforms, preferably OpenText (GXS), including governance of mapping requests and service delivery.
  • Structured, detail-oriented working style with strong critical thinking skills
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to collaborate effectively with internal teams and external partners.
