Job Description
We have an opening for a Technical Trainer in the Safety Education and Training Office. In this role, in close collaboration with instructional designers and subject matter experts you will apply learning principles and instructional strategies to design and deliver impactful instructor-led training in support of Environmental, Safety & Health (ES&H) programs, with a primary emphasis on radiation protection training and qualification programs (e.g., Radiological Worker, Radiological Control Technician (RCT), and related technical training, including Health Physicist professional development support). You will also ensure training programs meet applicable Department of Energy (DOE) directives, standards, and the Laboratory’s requirements, and effectively engage a diverse workforce across multiple generations. Training assignments may include support for DOE-regulated radiological training and qualification programs aligned with applicable requirements and guidance (e.g., DOE O 426.2A, DOE-HDBK-1078, DOE-HDBK-1130, and DOE-HDBK-1122). This position is within the Environment, Safety & Health (ES&H) Directorate.
This position may offer a hybrid schedule, which includes the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week, after a probationary period. The specifics of the hybrid schedule, including the exact number of days required in the office and virtual work options, may vary based on the needs of the team and the organization.
This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.
You will
- Design, develop, deliver, and present engaging instructor-led training using a variety of methods, including classroom instruction, computer-based training, structured self-study activities, and performance-based practical evaluations, in support of radiological and other ES&H topics.
- Apply adult learning principles, instructional design best practices, and the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT) to develop and maintain effective training materials, lesson plans, and instructional content that support consistent delivery and positive learner performance outcomes.
- Conduct periodic training needs analyses and help identify required knowledge, skills, and abilities to support development or revision of courses, learning objectives, and training outcomes, with particular emphasis on radiation protection training and qualification needs.
- Create, revise, and maintain course content and training assets (e.g., lesson materials, scripts, graphics, assessments, and supporting resources) to ensure accuracy, relevance, engagement, and alignment with DOE requirements and Laboratory needs.
- Develop and implement evaluation methods to assess learner performance and training effectiveness, including participant feedback, written assessments, exam content, practical demonstrations, and other performance evaluations (e.g., OJT evaluations or oral boards), as applicable.
- Gather, analyze, and use feedback and performance data to refine course content, improve instructional delivery, and support continuous improvement and corrective actions.
- Collaborate with instructional designers, subject matter experts, and directorate personnel to assess training needs, develop and present proposed solutions, and facilitate stakeholder review and concurrence.
- Utilize instructional tools and technologies, and assess related equipment/software needs, enhance the learning experience, maintain effective delivery approaches, and recommend solutions based on required functionality and training needs.
- Assist in programmatic assessments and audits to determine the compliance status and overall effectiveness of various ES&H training programs within the Safety Education & Training Office.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level
- Lead development of advanced training programs, strategies, and methodologies to ensure alignment with DOE directives, standards, and Laboratory requirements, and to improve program effectiveness and consistency.
- Lead in-depth analyses of training effectiveness and program performance, including evaluation trends, regulatory changes, and stakeholder feedback; recommend and implement improvements, corrective actions, and data collection strategies.
- Lead programmatic assessments and audits to evaluate the compliance status and overall effectiveness of ES&H training programs within the Safety Education & Training Office.
- Serve as a principal contact and subject matter resource for training initiatives, representing the organization in internal and external engagements, mentoring less experienced training staff, and applying advanced technical/radiological knowledge to improve training methods and outcomes.
Qualifications
- Ability to secure and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level security clearance which requires U.S. citizenship.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Health Physics, Physical Science, or other related technical field, or equivalent combination of education and related technical experience.
- Broad knowledge of radiological operations and monitoring concepts, including the use of health and safety measurement and radiation monitoring equipment, and familiarity with radiological work practices and technical training environments.
- Ability to support radiological and ES&H training activities, including coordinating with subject matter experts and technical personnel to develop, update, and improve training content, instructional materials, and delivery approaches.
- Proficient knowledge of and experience applying the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT), including training program design, course development, facilitation, and evaluation/analysis of educational and training courses to support learner performance outcomes.
- Ability to analyze course-level performance data and implement improvements within established program framework.
- Excellent presentation, and facilitation skills, including effective instruction in interactive classroom environments and the ability to communicate technical radiological and training information in a clear, engaging, and learner-centered manner.

- Extensive experience designing, developing, implementing, and improving DOE-aligned radiological training and qualification programs (e.g., Institutional Radiological Worker Training, RCT training programs, and/or Health Physicist professional development programs), preferably within a National Laboratory or similarly regulated environment, using the Systematic Approach to Training (SAT).
