Job Description

We have an opening for a Project Management Engineer to lead and support the execution of high-impact technical projects that address national security challenges. This role focuses on managing milestone-driven, high-risk, high-reward projects in a fast-paced, multidisciplinary environment. You will work alongside a Principal Investigator and technical experts to deliver results on aggressive timelines while navigating complex scientific and engineering landscapes. You will contribute to a growing portfolio of national security related R&D initiatives in fields such as bioengineering, advanced materials and manufacturing, devices and microsystems, and inertial fusion energy. This position emphasizes initiative, autonomy, and leadership in both planning and execution. You will help drive large-scale strategic projects that align with the Lab’s mission in research and development for national security. This position will be in the Materials Engineering Division (MED) within the Engineering Directorate.

This position offers a hybrid schedule, blending in-person and virtual presence. You will have the flexibility to work from home one or more days per week.

This position will be filled at either level based on knowledge and related experience as assessed by the hiring team. Additional job responsibilities (outlined below) will be assigned if hired at the higher level.

You will 

  • Support the successful execution of milestone-driven technical projects across engineering and scientific domains.
  • Advise project teams and Principal Investigators on team organization, scheduling, budgeting, risk mitigation, and progress tracking.
  • Gather and synthesize scientific and technical content for reporting, proposals, and decision briefings, and coordinate technical communication among project stakeholders, collaborators, and management.
  • Apply technical and operational knowledge to improve project and organizational safety, process efficiency, and compliance.
  • Plan and oversee procurement, fabrication, and system integration tasks as needed.
  • Support contract oversight and collaboration agreements.
  • Participate in implementing or improving project management frameworks, tools, and best practices.
  • Document procedures and develop compelling visual content for project updates and milestones.
  • Organize and facilitate team meetings, including scheduling, logistics, agendas, and action tracking.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Additional job responsibilities, at the TSS.3 level 

  • Leverage your technical background to inform strategic project decisions and apply project management skills to drive technically complex work to completion.
  • Provide solutions to a diverse range of complex issues and problems that require in-depth analysis and the creative use of non‑established techniques and methods.
  • Provide solutions to difficult technical and operational issues associated with specific projects while working within ambiguous, ill-defined, or conflicting policies and practices.
  • Coordinate complex work and milestones across multiple simultaneous projects effectively.

Qualifications

  • Ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. DOE Q-level (equivalent to DoD TS) security clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.
  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering, science, project management, or a related field, or the equivalent combination of education and related experience.
  • Experience working in a laboratory, R&D, or machine shop environment.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, document analyses, and prepare, present, and explain technical information.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment with initiative, creativity, and strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to multitask and manage multiple projects with competing needs in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of project management methodologies and experience implementing project management tools and practices.

Additional qualifications at the TSS.3 level

  • Advanced knowledge of and experience with bioengineering, advanced materials and manufacturing, devices and microsystems, or inertial fusion energy.
  • Experience providing guidance and informal mentoring to less experienced personnel.
  • Advanced knowledge of project management methodologies and experience implementing project management tools and practices.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills necessary to effectively collaborate in a team environment, document analyses, and prepare, present, and explain technical information

Qualifications We Desire

  • Master’s degree in engineering, science, project management, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with DoD reporting requirements.
  • Experience conducting experiments in a laboratory environment.
  • Experience implementing a software system, process efficiency initiative, or broad organizational procedure.
  • Current security clearance with the DOE, DoD, or another U.S. Government department.

Pay Range

$129,150 - $196,476 Annually

$129,150 - $163,764 Annually for the TSS.2 level

$154,950 - $196,476 Annually for the TSS.3 level

This is the lowest to highest salary we in good faith believe we would pay for this role at the time of this posting; pay will not be below any applicable local minimum wage.  An employee’s position within the salary range will be based on several factors including, but not limited to, specific competencies, relevant education, qualifications, certifications, experience, skills, seniority, geographic location, performance, and business or organizational needs.
