Job Description

The primary responsibility a moulder operator is to efficiently and safely operate the various profile and surface moulders in an operation producing handrails and mouldings of wood.  An operator in this position is expected to work in a hands-on fashion, to take ownership of the quality and quantity of product produced during his/her shift and to be actively involved in continual process improvements.  The successful employee in this position will be a self-starter receiving general supervision.    

Qualifications

The essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Set up and operate moulder to plane, shape, profile and groove wood for handrails and other mouldings
  • Read work orders and examine product specifications to determine moulder setup procedures, material to be used, proper run sequence
  • Selects and installs cutting heads on machine according to profile and other specifications and inserts and bolts specified cutterheads using wrenches and gauges
  • Positions heads on molder, adjusts guides, pressure bars, and table levels according to depth, position of cuts, and to achieve proper specifications and stock dimensions
  • Starts machine, places stock on feed table, and turns handwheels to press feed rollers against stock for feeding stock through machine; or inserts stock into hopper of automatic feed mechanism that carries stock through machine
  • Inspects material for defects prior to and after processing through the moulder
  • Verifies dimensions of material, using gauges, rule, or caliper
  • Measure dimensions of finished workpieces to ensure conformance to specifications, using precision measuring instruments, templates and fixtures.
  • Ensures processes are achieving goals for output, downtime and scrap, responsible for quality of product being produced.
  • Accurately reports production activity through system transactions and written documents and reports
  • Identifies and communicates machine maintenance and / or performance issues
  • Ensures proper guarding and safety devices are functioning and in use
  • Provides coverage as needed in other areas within or outside of the department
  • Other tasks may be assigned based upon the current work load and the needs of the company and customer
