Job Description

A Stair Builder constructs standard, custom circular and spiral, as well as unique and difficult circular and spiral stairs or components for stairs, circular and spiral staircases via the interpretation of architectural drawings.  The incumbent in this position is expected to have significant experience in a woodworking environment, experience using multiple types of woodworking equipment, ability to improve upon existing designs, consult on new ideas and processes and to work independently.  The incumbent will safely operate band, circular, jig, reciprocating and compound miter saws, planers and pneumatic equipment to build custom stair cases. This position will perform the listed duties and any others reasonably assigned by their supervisor or his/her designee.

Qualifications

The knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the daily tasks and job duties as follows

  • Functional and working hands-on knowledge of various types of machinery and various power tools typically used in a cabinet making or custom wood working environment  and the manufacturing abilities and limits of the equipment (i.e.: molders, planers, support tooling and fixturing) plus be able to set up and operate equipment.
  • Working knowledge of arithmetic and geometry and know how to apply.
  • Proven and demonstrable design and design problem solving skills.
  • Use measuring equipment, hand tools, etc.… associated with woodworking.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawing/sketches/diagrams and read work orders or other instructions to determine operating methods or sequences.
  • Estimate material requirements and therefore decipher how much raw material is needed for a stair system.
  • Confer with sales staff, customers or designers to determine order specifications.
  • Determine distinguish wood species and to compare physical characteristics of materials to specifications and standards.
  • Measure materials to mark reference points, cutting lines, or other indicators.
  • Trim excess material from work pieces.
  • Attach decorative or functional accessories to products.
  • Cut industrial materials in preparation for fabrication or processing.
  • Shape surfaces or edges of wood work pieces.
  • Drill holes in parts, equipment, or materials.
  • Assemble wood products.
  • Measure dimensions of completed products or work pieces to verify conformance to specifications.      Ability to be a self-starter requiring minimal supervision that is results and deadline driven.
  • Ability to functionally use a personal computer to perform inquires, update information, and print reports on a daily basis.
  • Familiarity with CAD Design software is a plus.
  • Able to obtain and keep a Powered Industrial Truck License.
  • At least 18 years old and legally able to work in the United States.
  • Must be willing to work overtime and weekends as/if needed on short notice.
  • Other tasks as assigned based upon the needs of L J Smith and/or the customer.
