Job Description

This role will be located in New York, NY; San Francisco, CA; Sunnyvale, CA or can be remote.

This role may be remote or hybrid. At LinkedIn, hybrid roles are performed both from home and from a LinkedIn office on select days, as determined by the business needs of the team. Remote roles are performed from the designated home work location upon time of hire, and any changes to this home work location requires a review of remote status and approval.  

The Chief Economist serves as LinkedIn’s senior authority on global economic trends, labor markets, and the future of work, partnering closely with LinkedIn’s Executive Leadership and reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer. This role will inform strategic decisions, customer advice, and LinkedIn’s brand in policy and media circles. This role blends rigorous economic research with real-world application—translating complex macroeconomic, financial, and technological dynamics into actionable insights that inform business strategy, public dialogue, and societal impact. 

The Chief Economist leads a multidisciplinary team of economists and data scientists, shaping original research on global labor markets, artificial intelligence and work, monetary policy, capital markets, and economic risk. As a trusted internal and external voice, this leader represents LinkedIn with policymakers, media, academic institutions, boards, and global stakeholders. 

Responsibilities: 

Economic Leadership & Research 

  • Set and lead the strategic economic research agenda, with a focus on labor markets, productivity, AI’s impact on work and organizations, and global macroeconomic trends. 

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing team of economists and data scientists. 

  • Oversee the creation of proprietary, data-driven insights that inform executives, customers, policymakers, and the broader public. 

Business & Strategic Partnership 

  • Advise senior leadership on macroeconomic conditions, economic risk, and trends, helping leaders assess when and where to accelerate growth or adjust strategy in response to changing economic signals. This person also consults with our customers. 

  • Translate economic signals into implications for workforce strategy, hiring, skills development, and organizational design. 

  • Partner cross-functionally with Product, Policy, Communications, Marketing, and Sales to embed economic insights into decision-making and storytelling. 

Public Thought Leadership 

  • Serve as a visible, credible public voice on economic and labor market issues, strengthening LinkedIn’s corporate brand and influence through rigorous, data-driven thought leadership shared across Marketing channels, media, and external forums. Engage with global media outlets, academic forums, and industry conferences to shape the public discourse on the future of work. 

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with policymakers, customers, central banks, academic institutions, and global economic organizations. 

Governance & External Engagement 

  • Represent LinkedIn in external advisory roles, economic councils, and board-level discussions where appropriate. 

  • Contribute economic expertise to discussions around governance, risk management, and long-term economic resilience. 

  • Uphold the highest standards of analytical rigor, independence, and credibility. 

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: 

  • Advanced degree in Economics or a related field (PhD strongly preferred). 

  • 12+ years' experience in macroeconomics, monetary policy, labor economics, capital markets, and economic risk. 

  • 10+ years' working in large, global matrixed company 

Preferred Qualifications: 

  • Demonstrated experience synthesizing macroeconomic and labor market signals into clear business implications, scenarios, and trade‑offs, and advising senior leaders on strategic decisions. 

  • Experience spanning multiple sectors, such as technology, finance, banking, and/or public institutions. 

  • Proven experience leading complex analytical teams, including economists and data scientists. 

  • Exceptional ability to communicate complex economic concepts to executive, public, and non-technical audiences. 

  • Experience partnering with Marketing, Communications, or Brand teams to scale credible, data‑driven economic thought leadership. 

  • Established track record as a public speaker and media contributor on economic topics. 

  • Experience engaging with senior policymakers, central banks, or serving on boards is strongly preferred. 

  • Intellectually rigorous with a strong, data-backed point of view. 

  • Externally credible and comfortable representing LinkedIn on global stages. 

  • Strategic translator who connects economic insight to business and societal impact. 

  • Collaborative leader who builds trust across disciplines and stakeholders. 

  • Mission-driven, with a passion for improving economic opportunities at scale.

LinkedIn is committed to fair and equitable compensation practices.   

The pay range for this role is $330,000-$480,000. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.
