Job Description
We are seeking a hands-on Senior Backend Software Engineer to build and evolve correctness-critical financial services. This role focuses on production Java and Spring Boot 3 microservices that keep billing-account data accurate, compliant, reliable, and synchronized across distributed services, multiple datastores, and external platforms.
Enterprise experience strongly preferred.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and maintain production Java and Spring Boot services.
- Deliver features, bug fixes, and reliability improvements across distributed backend systems.
- Design reliable event-driven workflows with safe retry and idempotency behavior.
- Solve transactional-consistency, concurrency, and notification-reliability problems at scale.
- Design and execute safe entity and database-schema migrations.
- Integrate backend services with external REST- or SDK-based platforms.
- Maintain accurate and compliant billing-account state across relational and non-relational datastores.
- Write unit and integration tests that meet established coverage and quality gates.
- Deliver production-ready changes through GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
- Improve observability, resilience, and deployment safety through Datadog monitors and canary practices.
- Use AI coding assistants responsibly while independently validating code quality and correctness.
Qualifications
Must-Have Skills
- 5+ years of hands-on backend engineering experience with Java and Spring Boot 3.
- Demonstrated ownership of production microservices in a distributed-systems environment.
- GraphQL experience through either building APIs with Netflix DGS or consuming them with the Apollo Java or Kotlin client.
- Hands-on production experience with at least one of AWS SQS, Apache Kafka, or RabbitMQ.
- Demonstrated experience designing idempotent event handlers.
- Strong JPA/Hibernate and Spring Data JPA experience with MySQL or Aurora.
- Hands-on transactional-design and optimistic-locking experience.
- Experience writing JPA entities and managing schema migrations against a production MySQL or Aurora database.
- Proficiency with JUnit 5 and Mockito for unit testing.
- Experience writing integration tests against live environments.
- Experience with Gradle multi-module builds.
- Experience with GitLab CI/CD pipelines.
- Experience using Datadog metrics and monitors.
- Experience using Datadog monitors as deployment quality gates in a CI/CD pipeline.
- Experience integrating with an external REST- or SDK-based third-party platform.
- Responsible use of AI coding assistants such as GitHub Copilot or Claude, with independent review and validation of output.
Nice-to-Have Skills
- Prior experience in Billing or Payments.
- Experience with DynamoDB using AWS SDK v2.
- Experience with MongoDB using Spring Data.
- Experience working across multiple datastores in one architecture.
- Experience with Netflix DGS.
- Experience integrating with Zuora or a comparable billing platform.

- This is a contract engagement at 40 hours per week.
- The anticipated engagement runs through March 31, 2027.
