The Geospatial Specialist is responsible for the development, maintenance and continuous improvement of Council’s Geographic Information System (GIS), ensuring spatial applications, data and technologies meet organisational needs. The role provides technical leadership, specialist advice and innovative spatial solutions, while maintaining data integrity, supporting users, and collaborating with stakeholders to align GIS capabilities with Council’s strategic and data governance objectives.

What you’ll be doing:

• Maintain corporate spatial datasets to ensure effective operation of GIS applications, including managing the systems security related issues.
• Manage Intramaps and associated web applications ensuring a high level of efficiency and functionality.
• Maintain data updates, transformation and integration processes including SQL scripts and FME workspaces.
• Identify opportunities and implement solutions to improve the overall functionality of GIS applications.
• Develop tools and templates to create modelling, analysis and reports.
• Carry out various application development as necessary in order to assist the user requirements and overall GIS functionality.
• Develop targeted web mapping applications for engagement with, or providing information to, the community.
• Create new spatial datasets for the corporate GIS system as required, either through data capture or the result of spatial analysis.
• Develop processes to ensure that captured data is of the appropriate standard.
• Partner with Enterprise Architecture and Data Governance functions to ensure spatial data lineage, quality standards and access controls align with Council-wide data governance frameworks.

The skills and experience you’ll bring to the role:

• Demonstrated sound knowledge and experience with GIS, Asset Management Systems and related technologies, including high level proficiency in AutoCAD Map 3D, QGIS, ArcGIS Pro, Intramaps, SQL Server Spatial, FME Desktop and Server.
• Demonstrated knowledge and experience of GIS and Asset Management systems and ability to maintain the integration between the systems.
• Understand customer requirements and develop GIS applications to meet business needs.
• Proven skills and knowledge to effectively handle change management issues relating to GIS systems development and implementation.
• Ability to initiate, plan, implement and adopt improvements to GIS systems and processes.
• Ability to undertake detailed investigative tasks, research and solve problems through a combination of discussion, negotiation and teamwork.
• Demonstrated ability to liaise, discuss, negotiate and resolve specialist problems with internal and external stakeholders.
• High level of oral and written communication and report writing skills

Required Certifications & Qualifications:

• Tertiary qualifications in GIS, computer science or similar, or lesser formal qualifications with extensive experience in GIS and spatial technologies in a Local Government environment.
