Job Description

Interior Designer. HFS Company is a nationally recognized AEC project management and consulting firm working through prime contracts on a variety of federal and military medical projects throughout the US and Europe. We provide support services across the entire facilities lifecycle to help our clients reach their capital improvement goals economically and strategically. 

Serve as Interior Designer and Consultant at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the nation’s premier military healthcare facility. Responsible to plan, design, and review new and/or or modernize healthcare facilities interiors. Provide expert advice on interior design principles for such diverse projects as large medical treatment facilities, patient waiting areas, patient treatment areas (including Surgical, Laboratory, Behavioral Health, Internal Medicine areas), and inpatient hospital accommodations.

Provides expert advice to clinical and administrative customers to select and design finishes and furnishings in a medical treatment facility. Ensures maximum durability for longevity, aesthetic value, life expectancy, functional space arrangements, flow planning, etc. Specifically selects within the medical center appropriate textures/fabrics, floor coverings, finishes, furnishings materials, signage/graphics, and furniture materials/ systems to create optimum interior spaces meeting hygiene and fire and life safety requirements as well as patient care needs. 

Establishes and maintains an extensive, current design resource library comprised of modern construction material samples, furnishings, equipment, and product literature. This library will also include contract literature and schedules. 

Creates and develops complete-interior designs, including complex features, using the latest interior design and construction techniques. Develops design plans considering such factors such as function, infection control, user needs, energy use, building codes, durability and life cycle costs. Concentrates healthcare designs on effective space planning, aesthetics and economics. 

Prepares complete interior design drawings in compliance with Defense Health Agency criteria and project requirements including floor plans, interior elevations, section details, perspectives and finishes. Balances aesthetic features to blend with existing structures, site and environment. Provides A/E design team with information as to structural, mechanical, and electrical requirements based on interior design features. Writes interior architectural features of specifications and design analysis reports. Provides quantity material takeoffs for interior architectural features. Prepares preliminary and final interior design plans for building structures, including finishes, textures, colors, interior and exterior color boards. 

Prepares complete Comprehensive Interior Design (CID) packages to accompany building design. This includes detailed furnishings and equipment layouts and schedules encompassing power and communication requirements, type and functional needs, quantities, cost estimates, procurement documents, and placement plans. 

During construction or renovation period, resolves other interior architectural problems that arise and oversees installation phase and post-occupancy issues. Reviews, evaluates and determines adequacy of shop drawings, samples, certificate of compliance, laboratory analyses, paint certifications and other submittals or contractors' data under Government contracts. Determines compliance or noncompliance for project submittals. Evaluates technical data pertaining to materials, equipment, shop drawings, and contractors' proposals for modifications, additions and methods of installation. Reviews submittals for technical feasibility, adequacy and compliance with specifications. Determines if materials and equipment meet contract requirements. Recommends approval or rejection of all or parts of the submissions and proposals. 

Coordinates and monitors the creation of interior designs performed under contract. Participates in A/E pre-selection process. Evaluates and/or recommends the work of A/E firms to ensure interior design excellence and compliance with regulations and design criteria. Reviews designs prepared by A/E firms. 

Designates contract omissions or failures that do not meet the client's criteria or agency requirements. Confers with architect-engineers during work progress ensuring compliance with directives, conformity to the Construction Agent's policy and criteria. Addresses the customers' satisfaction of the project progress. Monitors design progress and reports anticipated problems that adversely affect the schedule to supervisor. Ensures that the design has utilized appropriate codes, technical manuals, etc., including zoning, OSHA, life safety, handicap accessibility provisions, etc. Prepares and coordinates amendments during advertising period.

Qualifications

·         7-10+ year’s start to finish Interior Design project management experience

·         3+ year’s Interior Design experience on large scale healthcare projects

·         Experience in space planning, material selection for construction

·         Experience producing thorough, accurate, detailed construction selection documents

·         Degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture or Arts

·         NCIDQ accreditation preferred; LEED accreditation a plus

·         Ability to read and understand Architectural drawings

·         Excellent verbal and written communication skills

·         Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar software

·         Proficiency in MSOffice applications

·         Must be able to obtain a secret clearance
