Genomics England successfully led the world-leading 100,000 Genomes Project, which compared and analysed individuals’ genetic codes to help diagnose, treat and prevent illness.
We're now accelerating our impact, working with the NHS to further develop and embed genomic healthcare and research in Britain. Our next chapter involves working with patients, doctors, scientists, government and industry to improve genomic testing, and help researchers access the health data and technology they need to make new medical discoveries and create more effective, targeted medicines for everybody.
We believe that everyone should benefit from genomic healthcare and the promise of personalised, predictive and preventative insights. So many personalised medicine findings only apply to individuals of European ancestry because of the imbalance of datasets used for research. Our goal is to address this. This Community Manager role is a unique opportunity to join our Diverse Data initiative, which involves engaging with the academic research community, Genomics Englands' bioinformaticians and analysts, as well as grassroots organisations.
We recognise that the questions, answers and solutions needed to reach our goals can’t all lie within our organisation and we are looking to hire the new role of Community Manager to support this aim. As our Diverse Data Community Manager, you’ll engage a wide variety of people (both internal and external) such as technologists, scientists, policymakers, grassroots organisations and public engagement practitioners, to ultimately contribute to our toolbox of approaches, methods and solutions to addressing the genomic diversity gap. We want to bring these people together using open source data challenges, roundtables, deep dives and workshops to work together to collectively use their wisdom to build out solutions.
To be successful in this role, you’ll have some impressive experience in organising or being an active member of a network or community, preferably one with a significant online component.
It’d also be a huge bonus if you:
- Have a track record of a combination of:
o Supporting in the publication of articles, FAIR data sets, and/or open source software libraries for an academic audience.
o Supporting in the publication of articles, blog posts, for a general audience.
o Supporting in the publication of white papers or policy briefings for an audience of decision makers in government, industry or the charity sector.
- Have a natural ability to roll your sleeves up and get stuck in with any group or team, be it in a community centre in the suburbs of Bradford, or a symposium with Professors across the world
- Be empathetic with those with lived experience and expertise of working out in local communities
- Be a top class networker
- Be a huge fan of data collection, analysis and questioning assumptions

A degree in a discipline which provides a good basis for understanding genomic sciences and/or data science is preferred but not essential and we will consider equivalent experience

As part of our recruitment process, all successful candidates are subject to a Standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. We therefore require applicants to disclose any previous offences at point of application, as some unspent convictions may mean we are unable to proceed with your application due to the nature of our work in healthcare.
Genomics England operate a blended working model, as we know our people appreciate the flexibility. We expect most people to come into the office 2 times each month as a minimum. However, this will vary according to role and will be agreed with your team leader. For some people this is 1 day a quarter, for others it is several days a week. There is no expectation that staff will return to the office full time unless they want to. The exception would be some of our roles that would require you to be on site full time e.g., lab teams, reception team.
Our teams and squads have, and will continue to, reflect on what works best for them to work together successfully and have the freedom to design working patterns to suit, beyond the minimum. Our office locations at the moment are Cambridge and Farringdon (London) and in Summer 2022 we are relocating our London office location to Canary Wharf. We will also be expanding our regional offices.
Looking ahead to our move to Canary Wharf, we will be designing our new space with blended working in mind, and with the flexibility to adapt to changing work patterns. During the pandemic we will be following government advice on working from home guidance.
