Job Description

We are looking for a Health Economist who will build, develop and manage economic models day-to-day for the cost and benefits arising from Genomics England’s (GEL) research and healthcare work. You'll use national health economic data and Genomics England (GEL) data to model and measure the macro-economic impact of the introduction of genomic medicine into the NHS.

This is an essential and integral role which provides the economic lens into commercial development and management decisions and is an exciting opportunity to add real value and clear context to our cutting edge activities. The outputs of this work will have a major impact on GEL’s ability to demonstrate the value of Genomic Medicine and precision healthcare, and to make the case for Genomic funding.

As an Health Economist, you will produce economic models, building understanding of the Genomic Medicine in the NHS, and also its impact and benefits in healthcare, research, industry and government the UK. The outputs of this work will have a major impact on GEL's ability to demonstrate the value of Genomic Medicine and precision healthcare, and to make the case for Genomics funding at fiscal events such as Budgets and Spending Reviews.

Your day to day will consist of working with partners, stakeholders and external advisors to assimilate data from a range of sources, to integrate GEL and national health economic datasets (e.g. Hospital Episode Statistics, other healthcare databases). You'll produce cost/benefit analyses, lead presentation of outputs to internal and external stakeholders. You'll also be responsible for the research and critical appraisal of medical and economic reports/literature, supporting business development and funding applications, as well as provide data-driven guidance and recommendations on questions posed by the executive leadership team.

Skills & Experience for Success:

We anticipate the ideal candidate will be:

  • Highly experienced in building economic models, ideally for the use of healthcare or government facing.  
  • Comfortable leading in ambigious and under time pressured environment  
  • Adept at building high-quality, technically robust and clinically valid models in Microsoft Excel or other software 
  • Ability and confidence to work independently. The role is embedded in a small performance team and is the only economist role within GEL. 
  • Able to create quality outputs at pace 
  • Highly numerate and an excellent communicator
  • A keen and pro-active collaborator 
  • Eager to progress self-learning and development 

The following skills are also desirable:

  • Knowledge and/or experience of government and/or healthcare processes and assesses benefits/vfm . For example, experience using the HMT Green/Magenta books or experience of working with NHS data.  
  • Ability to quickly interpret and manipulate raw data, provide analysis & conclusions and present in an accessible way.  
  • Consulting experience or similar. 
  • Experience with statistical software such as R. 
  • Experience in public policy 
  • Experience in statistics and epidemiology. 

Qualifications

  • Experience in economic modelling 
  • Post-graduate qualifications or equivalent experience in economics or mathematics.
