We are currently recruiting for a Principal Engineer on a permanent basis.

As a key addition to the wider IT function, you will be the lead Engineer for a value stream, providing technical leadership, support and guidance for 20-25 Engineers building technical products that support esure’s business and its ambitious digital transformation.

What you will do:

• Senior member of esure’s engineering community in a technical leadership role
• Lead engineer for one of our value streams, a stream is typically 5 squads and 20-25 engineers
• Responsible for the architectural roadmap in your stream and evolving the broad architecture vision in conjunction with chief architect
• Mentor and provide technical leadership to senior engineers, promoting their growth and stimulating tech communities to address key issues and improve engineering practices
• Identify root causes and lead initiatives to improve engineering processes, standards and technologies that support engineering and business goals
• Line management of a small team of specialists with high impact within and across value streams
• Collaboration with product lead to maintain value stream backlog and keep process improvement, security and pay off technical debt a part of engineering priorities
• Support in hiring senior engineering talent, building up a diverse, inclusive and positive culture that supports our strategy and standards.

What we would love you to bring:

• Experience in engineering leadership at a tribe or value stream level (multiple squads)
• Strategic problem solver, able to develop a long term vision and take both tactical and strategic steps to delivering it
• Exhibits drive and initiative to learn in order explore new and existing solutions, a deep love of technology
• Able to coach and mentor team members and be responsible for tech quality/standards across squads
• Strong software architecture experience with a background in distributed Java microservices based applications, DevOps and Agile
• Engineering practices within a cloud first environment (ideally AWS)
• Experience with CI/CD, Jenkins and Docker, ideally with Kubernetes.
• An advocate of continuous improvement and ability to mobilize colleagues to address issues
