Job Description

As a Principal Engineer for the Roads Team, you will be supporting a multidisciplinary Transport team, this position encompasses a blend of project execution and oversight, design leadership, fostering business growth and nurturing client relationships, alongside guiding and leading teams.

This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced transportation Engineer with demonstrated leadership skills and significant technical expertise in major roads and highways design, traffic engineering and project management.

What you’ll do

  • Lead and/or undertake the delivery of transport infrastructure projects for key clients across the private and public sectors
  • Provide technical expertise and advice through all stages of the project lifecycle from feasibility studies, design strategies, developed designs, and construction.
  • Develop detailed designs using modelling software and AutoCAD when required.
  • Lead a team of engineers and technicians, providing technical advice and direction to all employee levels through technical challenges and issues.
  • Review and sign off on engineering and technical outputs such as technical option reports, engineering principles & studies, and detailed designs, etc. to ensure compliance to relevant standards.
  • Manage project work technically and contractually to ensure that it meets technical requirements.
  • Financial management of projects by monitoring the actual time and cost expended on the total project against the budget, informing client of any changes in scope of work or other causes of variances from project resources.
  • Build and maintain strong external client relationships and contribute to the strategic growth of the roads sector by identifying and securing related business opportunities with key and emerging clients

Qualifications

Ideally, you will have 15+ years’ professional experience in providing exceptional technical expertise in major roads and highways projects with the ability to project manage complex projects through their full-life cycle within budget and on time. You will also demonstrate passion and dedication to the growth and development of your team as a people leader.

You will also have:

  • Relevant tertiary qualifications in Civil or Transport Engineering
  • CPEng highly desired (or willingness to obtain)
  • Recent experience within the NZ transport sector in a technical design role
  • Demonstrated expertise in a broad scope of Transport projects
  • Proven design leadership capabilities and broader people leadership ability
  • Demonstratable local authority knowledge and established NZTA relationships
  • Strong project delivery and management skills across the lifestyle of medium to large scale projects
  • Strong stakeholder and client management skills with focus on fostering business growth and nurturing strong client relationships
  • Strong communication – written and verbal, planning and organisational skills
