Job Description

The EDC Office of Communications has an opening for a part-time Social Media Manager, reporting to the Managing Editor. The Office of Communications is part of the EDC President’s Office and is responsible for all external communications to EDC’s various audiences about the work of the organization. This is a part-time role (24 hours/week) and based in Waltham, MA.

The Social Media Manager will coordinate the work of EDC’s social media channels (currently Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube, as well as an EDC blog). This position will also contribute to writing for EDC.org or publications as needed. The Social Media Manager will have strong social media and writing skills, and be knowledgeable in the latest trends and best practices for social media.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The person in this position is expected to communicate clearly and courteously; to develop and maintain positive relationships with clients, consultants, collaborators, co-workers, field sites, and funders; and to work respectfully with EDC colleagues. The job requires adherence to EDC policies & procedures.

The Social Media Manager is responsible for leading the development and execution of a variety of complex social media and writing projects for internal &/or external audiences; s/he

  • Independently works on problems or assignments of large scope, complexity, or impact, requiring review of various intangible factors; works on projects where analysis of data requires in-depth evaluation of various factors  
  • Creates and publishes content for EDC social media (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, EDC blog, and other) for various segments of EDC’s audiences. Ensures consistent tone, voice, and style across all platforms.
  • Creates a social media strategy with clear goals for unifying the EDC social media presence. Develops regular publishing schedule and responds to social media inquiries.
  • Stays abreast of social media trends, tools, and best practices, and suggests new features that keep pace with these trends. Advise editorial team on possible story ideas related to emerging trends.
  • Works to increase engagement among EDC audiences. Monitors social media channels and tracks their effectiveness. Create and present metrics reports and make recommendations for improvements.
  • Assists in development and execution of strategic communications to promote EDC’s mission, vision, and success
  • Writes a variety of articles and marketing or promotional pieces for the EDC website (EDC.org); prepares assigned pieces from knowledge of topic and editorial position, supplemented by study, research, or guidance
  • Guides development of publications through multiple revisions to achieve content objectives
  • Exercises judgment within generally defined practices in selecting methods and techniques for obtaining results
  • Independently determines methods and procedures on new assignments
  • Applies style and editorial rules and expertly uses electronic editing tools 
  • Discusses copy with supervisor or managing editor for approval and to incorporate changes 
  • Selects or recommends graphics to illustrate social media content.
  • Develops or assists in developing short videos to accompany content.
  • Recommends improvements in technical or administrative policies and procedures
  • May work in diverse technical areas across multiple organizations or on diverse assignments requiring broad experience and technical exposure

The Social Media Manager:

  • Advises Communications staff of editorial recommendations
  • Confers with division staff to determine specific or general subject material to be developed for publication
  • Troubleshoots problems
  • Collaborates with senior staff/management on complex questions; exercises tact and discretion in raising and resolving issues
  • Keeps management informed of status of issues and projects
  • Interviews individuals or attends meetings to obtain items or clarify information for inclusion and verify facts; researches or seeks technical advice and refers complex problems to senior staff/management
  • Provides technical guidance and may supervise regular or contract staff; may train or coach less experienced staff
  • Facilitates teamwork; engages collaboratively in feedback
  • May interact with freelance writers or editors, graphic artists, multimedia specialists, publishers and printers, guiding and reviewing quality

Qualifications

This position requires educational achievement; excellent writing skills; demonstrable initiative, creativity, and flexibility; ability to work independently and effectively in groups; and strong interpersonal & organizational skills. Specific requirements:

 

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent combination of training & experience
  • 5-7 years related experience with social media platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc.), writing, and communications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • A solid understanding of communications/marketing for nonprofit or educational organization
  • Strong knowledge of Word, Google Analytics, Hootsuite, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience in the application of marketing/communication principles
  • Demonstrated analytical skill and experience interpreting data and creating recommendations
  • Experience in photography or videography desirable
