Job Description

Being a VP, communications strategy at DentsuMB means you possess the advanced strategist’s bag of tricks. You consistently uncover rich, original consumer, cultural and competitive insights and translate them into fresh, holistic communications strategies that push the envelope. The most successful communications strategy directors have a strong sense of pop culture, current trends and category expertise. They are able to cross-pollinate within the organization – building upon each group’s strengths and discrete differences to add value and depth to a client’s entire communications plan. 

The VP, communications strategy has the desire and ability to be a strategic leader and is a key contributor in understanding and developing innovative, creative and effective client communications strategies and go-to-market ideas. Their understanding of consumer behavior, trends and channels helps creative teams build breakthrough ideas and media planning teams focus in on the right connections between the creative idea and consumers.  

Core competencies: original insight, collaboration, creativity/idea invention, ability to build logical arguments that are written simply and persuasively, ability to synthesize insights to conceive fresh strategies, supervision of strong team members, presentation skills, client service skills. 

Primary responsibilities: 

  • Formative & evaluative research and insight for strategy development 
    • Connect brand insights with nuanced consumer behavior and cultural trends to develop insights and concepts tied to the larger strategic & creative idea  
  • Strategic authorship, development and idea generation 
    • Originate comms strategies that are rooted in insights, have a connection idea at their heart and breakthrough ideas as a result 
    • Work with both the creative teams and the media teams to bring these strategies and corresponding ideas to life 
    • Draft and present succinct, compelling presentations that sell strategies and ideas 
    • Ensure the strategy manifests in plans and presentations (comms strategy cop) 
  • Help build this new competency at dentsuMB 
    • Lead the development of new ways of thinking and working across creative, strategy, media and account.  
    • Be a leader and advocate for communications strategy within your client team but also across the larger agency – and even dentsu creative as a whole. 

Qualifications

Qualified candidates may have a variety of backgrounds including Communications Planning, Strategic Planning, 360 Planning, Channel Planning, Account or Brand Planning with a media foundation. 

  • 10+ years experience in an advertising or marketing role, primarily in a planning, consulting or research role; creative agency experience a plus. 
  • 3+ years experience at a management or supervisory position. 
  • Proven success generating original, effective comms strategies 
  • Proven client relationship and leadership skills. 
  • Strong business, marketing, and consumer understanding; interest in what moves culture and current trends that impact comms planning. 
  • Understanding of all media channels and disciplines with the ability to develop ideas and strategies across all channels. 
  • Strong collaboration skills with the ability to lead and influence others across many disciplines both verbally and in concise presentations. 
  • Proven ability to work in a very fast-paced team environment as well as with ambiguity as we are building a new communications planning practice.
