Job Description

Crown is seeking an Aeronautics Research Analyst to join our Aerospace and Advanced Transportation business unit to contribute to several current and prospective efforts, many centered around uncrewed aircraft systems (UAS) and advanced air mobility (AAM).

Crown’s Aerospace & Advanced Transportation service area builds on decades of innovation with the Federal Aviation Administration, NASA, states, and industry partners assessing, developing, and implementing advanced airspace technologies. We leverage this foundation to transform the airspace so that it safely provides access to an ever-growing diversity of users and uses. From defining an urban air/ground intermodal transportation network to conceiving autonomous airspace management technologies, we provide leading-edge solutions across the spectrum for federal, state, and local governments and industry.

Typical projects include:

  • Develop advanced UAS 14 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) § Part 107 waivers, 14 CFR § Part 91 waivers, special flight authorizations, and other regulatory exemptions
  • Conduct market research on emerging aviation technologies such as UAS, AAM (including Urban and Regional Air Mobility), high altitude long endurance (HALE), and electric aircraft
  • Define operational concepts including development of concepts of operation (ConOps), operational use cases, and functional requirements
  • Support AAM physical and digital infrastructure requirements analysis including vertiport operations and UAS Traffic Management (UTM)
  • Develop UAS standard operating procedures, flight operations manuals, checklists, safety management systems, and other UAS flight operations documentation
  • Support economic impact analyses and market studies for emerging aviation technologies
  • Develop aeronautics strategy including formulating future visions, goals, and research portfolios
  • Conduct knowledge elicitation (surveys, interviews, workshops) with government and industry stakeholders

Crown is headquartered in Rosslyn, Virginia. The successful candidate for this position will have the option to work at our HQ office or work remotely, with occasional travel to HQ. The Crown Aerospace and Advanced Transportation business unit has a strong remote work culture enabling employees to flexibly get work done.

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in engineering, science, mathematics, computer science, or other related discipline is preferred
  • An academic and/or professional background in aeronautics/aviation is highly preferred and beneficial; a strong interest and desire to learn and grow in this area is critical
  • 1 to 3 years of experience with UAS and AAM technologies is highly desirable
  • Understanding of FAA regulations including 14CFR § Parts 21, 61, 91, 107, and 119 (including 121 and 135) and processes to request regulatory exemptions is desirable
  • Experience in leading studies and analyses and/or applying project management skills is beneficial. Such experience may be at the sub-task level or overall client task level
  • Experience researching external trends, sources, information to form perspectives and recommendations given quickly changing or ambiguous topics
  • Strong written and oral communication skills are essential, as are data analysis skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel) is required.
  • Software expertise, software development, visualization, and modeling & simulation skills (Tableau, MATLAB, C++, Java, Python, Visual Basic, machine learning, etc.) are a favorable differentiator

Ability to obtain a Suitability for Position of Public Trust clearance is required.
