Job Description

The Packaging Art Director is an incredible opportunity to play an integral role in producing premium packaging design solutions for a world-class brand. We are looking for a dynamic senior level packaging designer and leader to be responsible for the conception, design development, and production of innovative package design and marketing solutions.  

The ideal candidate has in-depth knowledge of structural engineering, packaging design, mechanicals/pre-press, and production; takes pride in the details of execution, and is a true expert in the packaging space. Passion for connecting brand strategy and design to the consumer user experience is critical. Must possess highly developed conceptual and communication skills, ability to create compelling graphic/visual design layouts, manage multiple creative projects, mentor designers, manage overseas production, and deliver quality work on short deadlines in a fast-paced environment. A portfolio of packaging experience is a pre-requisite for this position. 

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage creative process, timeline, and communication with key stakeholders 

  • Direct, manage, and mentor a small team of packaging production designers, contractors, and agencies  

  • Work with Product Managers and manufacturers to collect and gather all necessary package and product specifications, printing information, limitations, etc. 

  • Partner and collaborate with product managers, industrial designers, copy writers, and cross functional teams from concept to print proofs  

  • Illustrate design concepts and ideas through sketches and design applications 

  • Concept, create, and execute impactful, innovative design solutions  

  • Monitor project progress by working with Project Managers to ensure projects meet scope, timeline, budget and quality goals 

  • Construct packaging prototypes based on design concepts 

  • Expertly create & manipulate print dielines 

  • Deliver flawless mechanicals

  • Establish and input packaging specs into the PLM system

  • Execute retouching, manipulation and color correction for photography when needed 

  • Work with overseas factories to establish milestone dates and conduct press checks to ensure high quality output 

  • Work with photographers as needed for e-commerce and packaging photography 

  • Manage and traffic all packaging mock-ups for internal reviews and sales presentations

  • Carefully proof all package design files including variable copy, UPCs, distribution, compliance information, logo application and color

  • Organize, route and facilitate approvals on all proofs throughout the design & development process (design brief, initial concepts, mechanicals, film proofs) 

  • Track, archive, and maintain all incoming art files and hard copies 

Qualifications

  • Well-versed in best practices for print and packaging 

  • Experience art directing, managing, and mentoring teams and agencies 

  • Detailed oriented, accurate multi-tasker  

  • Excellent typographical and layout skills 

  • Strong team player who can work well in a cross functional team environment 

  • Highly self-motivated, independent thinker with a positive attitude 

  • Outstanding communication skills with excellent organizational and follow-up skills

Requirements 

  • BA or Bachelor of Fine Arts degree  

  • Minimum of 8 years of packaging design experience, preferably with established CPG brands either at a design firm, brand agency or in-house creative group 

  • Must have expertise in production, pre-press printing processes and color breakdowns 

  • Proficient in Illustrator/Photoshop/InDesign/Macintosh OSX and Microsoft Office Suite  

  • Knowledge of DIY and craft industry a plus
