Job Description


The Community Benefits Division of External Affairs develops the strategic frameworks for Agency-wide community benefits and environmental justice programs and activities, partners with firms, community-based stakeholders, and other city agencies, manages pilot programs, and evaluates community outcomes related to investments and partnerships. 

General Description
Under minimum direction, the Associate Educator performs a variety of duties requiring a high level of responsibility; carries out complex tasks relative to the performance of management functions; researches and analyzes data; meets with community members, stakeholders and staff from various City Departments; and drafts interdepartmental agreements and documents. 

ABOUT COLLEGE HILL LEARNING GARDEN
The College Hill Learning Garden was built by the SFPUC to foster the next generation of environmental stewards. Since opening in April of 2016 thousands of SFUSD youth and young adults have attended free field trips at the College Hill Learning Garden; introducing them to the principals of environmental stewardship and ecoliteracy. Fieldtrips are offered to students K-12 (though primarily Grades 3rd – 5th) through hands-on NGSS-aligned lessons building on the water, power and sewer operations of the SFPUC and the SPFUC’s Bid Ideas educational framework.

POSITION SUMMARY
This position reports to the College Hill Learning Garden Program Manager and will assist in all operational and educational activities at the College Hill Learning Garden.  

Primary responsibilities include site maintenance and improvement, field trip outreach and teaching, and event coordination.  Additionally, position responsibilities may include administration and reporting of educational programming at the College Hill Learning Garden, scheduling fieldtrip visits with teachers and schools, coordination with the SFPUC, developing relationships with SFUSD teachers, developing College Hill community support and interest, maintaining educational vegetable gardens, and acting as a good neighbor to the community surround the College Hill Learning Garden.  

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Innclude: 

  • Teaching and Outreach (40%)
  • Assist the Program Manager in facilitating field trips for SFUSD students that utilize existing College Hill Learning Garden curriculum and use best practices in outdoor education. Harness lessons learned to refine and improve curriculum.
  • Connect 3rd-5th grade students from at least 10 partner schools in eastern San Francisco with field trip visits to College Hill at least once during the school year
  • Assist the Program Manager in field trip and event outreach efforts to SFUSD schools, non-profit organizations, and other community groups.
  • Garden Maintenance (40%)
  • Conduct ongoing upkeep and maintenance of the garden’s equipment, green infrastructure demonstration facilities, edible gardens, and site vegetation.
  • Ensure regular pruning, weeding, planting, applying mulch, amending soil with compost, watering, harvesting, cleaning and testing of rainwater harvesting systems, LID upkeep, general maintenance and upkeep of tools, tool shed and sink area, and other routine facility maintenance (such as upkeep of site drainage system, erosion prevention, weeding, replacement of dying plants, etc.).
  • Perform regular maintenance and upkeep of the features associated with and contained in the garden site such as:
  • adjacent sidewalk gardens and entry-way gate,
  • composting toilet,
  • solar panels,
  • upkeep and inspection of permeable pavement,
  • care for bee hive in compliance with best practices as well as applicable local law.
  • Ensure site security (ensuring gates are locked, tools are locked in tool shed, etc.)
  • Ensure health and safety of students and volunteers by monitoring air quality and adhering to CDC and DPH guidelines on COVID19 Safety protocols and procedures.
  • Manage, schedule and assign tasks on a weekly basis with the Program Manager
  • Planning & Facilitating Events (20%)
  • Assist the Program Manager in the planning and/or facilitation of events, such as volunteer workdays, garden workshops, or participation in community events. Some availability on weekends preferred.
  • Available for occasional evening, overnight or weekend work. 
  • • Class 1310, Public Relations Assistant performs other related duties as required and assigned. 

Desired Qualifications

  • A high level of English language proficiency, an ability to transcribe notes, and a strong capacity for English language verbal communication.
  • Detail oriented and proficient with Microsoft Suite.
  • Quick learner desired, particularly with intergovernmental processes.
  • Experience teaching and working with groups of students outdoors (especially ages 5-12).
  • Experience working with children and adults from diverse backgrounds.
  • Comfort speaking in front of students and the public.
  • Experience maintaining educational vegetable gardens.
  • Interest in environmental education, environmental justice and climate justice required.

Qualifications

Education: Requires possession of a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with major course work in public relations, journalism, English, mass communications, public administration, public policy or a related field.

Substitution: Professional experience in public affairs, public information, editorial, newspaper, magazine, radio, television, public relations, social media, digital engagement, advertising or similar work involving collection and dissemination of news and information may be substituted for the required degree on a year-for-year basis (up to a maximum of 2 years). Thirty (30) semester units or forty-five (45) quarter units equal one year.
