Job Description

Under general supervision, the Graphic Designer will perform specialized manual and/or desktop-published illustrating and art work in connection with the preparation of presentations, drawings, publications, public information and outreach materials, and similar media.

The Graphic Designer would be a new addition to the Communications Team to work on time-sensitive limited campaigns and outreach projects over the next three years.

Campaigns/projects include the following but are not limited to:

  1. Economic Support & Self Sufficiency (ESSS) Immigrant Outreach Project: Design new outreach materials and update existing materials with public benefit program information (inclusive of CalFresh, CalWORKs, Medi-Cal, County Adult Assistance Programs, Diaper Bank, and other ESSS services) to be culturally responsive for the project’s target audiences. As needed, create materials in other languages.
  2. Department of Disability and Aging Services (DAS) Reframing Disabilities Campaign: Support public awareness campaign to promote awareness and inclusiveness of the older adults with disabilities through graphic design and advertising.
  3. Family and Children’s Services (FCS) Foster Care Recruitment Campaign: Support creative development of campaign content and iteration of creative content based on findings of campaign content placements and feedback from media buyer and community partners.
  4. CalSAWs Launch: Support design of tailored content for SFHSA internal and external stakeholders, inclusive of employees and community-based partners.
  5. Develop new outreach materials to support Agency’s Food Access and County Veterans Service Organization programs.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS

According to Civil Service Commission Rule 109, the duties specified below are representative of the range of duties assigned to this job class and are not intended to be an inclusive list; may include additional duties as assigned.

  1. Prepares a wide variety of graphics, charts and print/digital materials to illustrate and provide comparative information on San Francisco Human Services Agency (SFHSA) programs, services, projects and initiatives; prepares and designs the format, page lay-outs and typography and executes various types of plain and color art work for a variety of publications and materials for internal and external audiences.
  2. Designs and prepares a variety of SFHSA’s outreach and public information materials to clients.
  3. Does artistic hand lettering and embossing; arranges displays of photographs and drawings; produces desktop lettering and designs; designs and executes exhibit panels of special projects.
  4. May set type for small printing press, advise and recommend content for print or digital distribution.
  5. Uses a variety of photographs, iconography and illustrations in designing reports, displays, fliers, posters, presentations, social media graphics, postcards, client mailings, newsletters, etc.
  6. Designs with a lens of cultural competency and nuances for SFHSA diverse audiences and clients, many of whom are from communities of color, monolingual, bilingual, etc.

Qualifications

  1. Education: Possession of a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Graphic Design, Commercial Art, Illustration, or a related field.

  2. Experience: Three (3) years professional, journey-level experience in graphic design or commercial art. This experience must include journey-level experience using computer-based desktop publishing (DTP) platform (Mac or PC) with associated scanners, printers, and software.

Substitution:
Additional qualifying experience may be substituted for the required education on a year for year basis.
