At the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) experiment, we continuously build, test, deploy and improve the software we use to process the data deriving from the protons and ions collisions generated by the Large Hadron Collider.

You will be part of a small and dynamic devops team of engineers and physicists at CERN, in the CMS experiment. We use mainly the Python programming language as well as Bash, Jenkins, git, computer architectures such as x86, ARM and POWER and work with C++/CUDA code and compilers such as GCC, NVCC and LLVM.

You will:

• Be responsible for the integration, testing and building of the data processing code provided by CMS physicists;
• Maintain the CMS software stack, including the third-party packages it relies on, continually improve CI/CD tools, processes, and procedures;
• Write and maintain infrastructure documentation.

Eligibility criteria

• You are a national of a CERN Member or Associate Member State;
• You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or other related field;
• You have no more than 4 years’ experience after completing your highest diploma.

Essential skills and experience

• Excellent knowledge of Linux, shell and based environments.
• Proficiency in shell/Python scripts programming; 
• Solid understanding of continuous integration, deployment, and operations concepts;
• You enjoy solving  problems, you work in an organised and efficient fashion and deliver high quality results.

Desired skills and experience

• Experience with configuration management, cloud stack and Linux containers;
• Familiarity with git and building tools, e.g. CMake, make and autotools;
• Knowledge of software debugging and profiling tools.

Please note that CERN Staff members are not eligible to apply for a Fellowship.

• An employment contract for between 6 months (minimum) up to 24 months, with a possible extension up to 36 months.
• A stipend ranging from 5,321 to 6,606 Swiss Francs per month (net of tax).
• Coverage by CERN’s comprehensive health scheme (for yourself, your spouse and children), and membership of the CERN Pension Fund.
• Depending on your individual circumstances: an installation grant, family, child and infant allowances as well as travel expenses to and from Geneva.
• 2.5 days of paid leave per month.
