Job Description

At BlueScope, we create and inspire smart solutions in steel, strengthening our communities and helping build a better future. Our steel has shaped everything from hospitals and schools, bridges and stadiums to fences and homes – influencing the way we live and work, now and in the future.

The Opportunity

Come and commence your career with an industry leader and join our Port Kembla Manufacturing facility as a Mechanical Engineering Cadet. As a part of the broader Australian Steel Products portfolio, we have six major manufacturing sites at Port Kembla that deliver a variety of products, innovative solutions and services to our export and domestic customers.

Working in highly skilled teams, and under the guidance of experienced engineers and technical specialists, you will rotate through various departments gaining invaluable exposure to the steel making process. The skills that you practise will provide a solid foundation towards understanding the engineering profession and furthering your engineering career.

Our Cadetship program at BlueScope creates an opportunity for you to gain world class experience and paid on the job training while simultaneously completing your degree. Cadetships provide a combination of part-time study and part-time work, where you will attend university classes one day a week.

Our Cadetships will commence in January 2022.

What Will You Do?

Throughout your cadetship, you will gain invaluable exposure to the plant gaining on the job experience, ranging from basic fitting, maintenance planning and strategies to projects and detailed design work. This will equip you with an understanding of the fundamentals of the equipment that either makes or processes our steel and the different roles that mechanical engineers play in steel manufacturing. At the completion of your cadetship you will have a strong foundation to take on a role in engineering design, project management, asset management and maintenance or follow other career opportunities which will arise in our company.

You will work alongside our tradespeople to understand the fundamentals of our equipment, then you will work within the engineering departments where you will design, and project manage improvements and installations on this equipment.

More About You

Enthusiastic to kick start your career, you will have a keen interest to grow and develop yourself as an engineer, as well as a commitment to the safety of yourself and others.

You will be comfortable working within a team environment, share ideas and actively collaborate and contribute to your team’s success.

You will currently be in your first or second year of study in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wollongong (UOW) or be willing to transfer to UOW for the year commencing 2022.
