The Slabmaking department at BlueScope Australian Products (ASP), Port Kembla Steelworks processes molten iron from our Blast Furnaces, adds solid steel scrap, alloys and oxygen to create the steel that our customers need and use. We produce approx. 3 millions tonnes per year of raw steel.

The OT (Operational Technology) and IT (Information Technology) systems that enable scheduling, guidance, analysis and control of these processes are located in a dedicated data centre on the operating plant.

We are seeking a Systems Engineer to join our team, reporting to the Slabmaking Technology Manager.

This role is the coordination and guidance role that ensures continuous operation of the OT and IT systems required for the safe production of quality steel. The scope includes systems from PLC plant controllers, to desktop and laptop devices used in the production environment, to server, database and mainframe applications and systems.

Your role is to oversee the systems used to make steel – both OT and IT – and ensure that they are fit-for-purpose, maintained and functional. This is a 24x7 manufacturing operation and after hours work will be required from time-to-time for problem solving and incident management.

Your duties will include:

  • Assist and guide problem solving through incidents to minimise loss and impact on steel production;
  • Overseeing the systems performance, maintenance and design, understanding how the apps and hardware interact and function, problem solving, suggesting and implementing improvements to our computing systems;
  • Translate, ensure accurate understanding and advise the operations teams, our internal and external onshore and offshore support teams on best path to fix problems quickly and guide improvement activities; and
  • Work with a team to advise our business on the best options for improving our manufacturing IT/OT systems.

What Are We Looking For?

This role focuses on interaction and ability to translate technical information to people of diverse background, training and experience. You will be a capable communicator and comfortable talking with all people on our plant.

You will have a keen interest in IT/OT and particularly in the application of IT/OT to the manufacturing industry. You will be self driven, willing to work with minimal supervision and a calm, clear and rational thinker who is willing to learn about a wide range of technology and capabilities.

Experience in the following may be desirable

  • Project Management of small or medium-size projects involving IT concepts;
  • Operating a manufacturing plant;
  • OT/IT systems support for a business or manufacturing plant ;
  • Previous experience as a progammer / software developer / systems builder; and
  • Materials Engineering or Metallurgy / metals manufacturing.

Qualifications

You will be qualified in engineering, sciences, IT or a related field.

Tertiary qualification is preferred, but not essential.
