Job Description

Location of positions: Mototolo Mine

The Section Ventilation Officer is responsible for the maintenance of ventilation and occupational hygiene systems and to provide the immediate supervisor with information to ensure a safe and healthy work environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensures adherence to legal compliance through monitoring and reporting.
  • Responsible to ensure that policies, programmes, standards, codes of practice and procedures are maintained in accordance with legal and Group requirements.
  • Statutory Plans are in place and up to date (Ventilation plans and mine rescue plans).
  • Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene programmes are properly administered.
  • Advise to management on Business Area Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene planning, technical systems and administration.
  • Assist in the implementation and maintenance of Emergency preparedness programmes.
  • Report and advice on Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene matters.
  • Provide solutions to specific Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene matters (known or identified via trend analysis).
  • Adhere to ventilation and occupational hygiene policies, procedures and standards.
  • Maintain an effective risk assessment programme.
  • Participate in audits and ensure follow up of risk assessments and audits findings, and the implementation of recommendations made.
  • Condition of ventilation and occupational hygiene equipment and instruments.
  • Monitoring quality of equipment and materials supplied to ensure adherence to safety and risk specifications.

This role is at a C5 level reporting to the Shaft Ventilation Engineer.

Qualifications

  • Elementary certificate in Mine Environmental Control
  • Chamber of Mines Intermediate Certificate in Mine Environmental Control
  • Preferred additional:
  • Certificate in Environmental Health
  • Certificate in Occupational Hygiene
  • Certificate in Occupational Hygiene Risk Assessment
  • Certificate in Occupational Hygiene Legislation

Experience

  • Experience of at least 2 years in the Mining and / or Refining environment
  • Practical experience of at least 5 years in the Ventilation and Occupational Hygiene Field.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Computer literate in MS Office, SAP, and other specialised technical programs
  • Associated member – Mine Ventilation Society of South Africa.
