Job Description
What will you be doing?
As a Mechanical Handling Engineer, you will join the team in Warrington to work on Nuclear Projects.
The work involves the design and development of bespoke mechanical systems used to retrieve, handle and manage radioactive waste where human access is not possible.
This is an excellent opportunity for a mechanical engineer looking to work on long-term, nationally significant nuclear programmes.
You’ll support mechanical engineering activities related to:
- Mechanical handling equipment
- Plant systems and engineered equipment
- Pipework, vessels, supports and structural steelwork
- Equipment used for waste handling, processing or containment
You will contribute across the full mechanical design lifecycle, including:
- Concept design of waste retrieval and remote handling equipment
- Detailed mechanical design and production of manufacturing drawings
- Design for manufacture and assembly (DfMA)
- Support to fabrication, installation and commissioning activities
- Mechanical handling systems including lifting, positioning and manipulation.
All work is carried out under strict nuclear safety, quality and assurance requirements.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
Candidates should have working knowledge of:
- BS 8888 (technical product documentation)
- GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing)
- AutoCAD and/or Autodesk Inventor
- Concept, detail and manufacturing design activities
- Mechanical handling principles
- CIMAGE (or similar nuclear design / data management tools)
- Application of sound engineering judgement.
Safety & Regulatory Awareness:
You should have awareness of working within regulated environments, including:
- CDM Regulations
- PUWER
- LOLER
- Safety-critical design and assurance processes
- Direct nuclear experience is beneficial but not essential — experience from defence, oil & gas, heavy plant or offshore engineering is highly transferable.
Required Qualifications:
- A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering, or equivalent military experience.
