Title: Instrumentation and Control (I&C) Engineer
Experience Needed: Open (All Levels Considered)
Working Arrangement: Hybrid – 3 days on site
Location: Bristol
Are you an Instrumentation and Control Engineer who enjoys tackling technically demanding projects in the energy sector? Join ALTEN, a leading engineering consultancy supporting major UK infrastructure programmes that power millions of homes across the country. You’ll contribute to one of the UK’s most high-profile low-carbon energy developments, helping to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable control systems in a highly regulated environment. This is an opportunity to be part of a long-term, technically complex, and safety-critical project that is shaping the future of clean energy in the UK.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, specify, and validate Instrumentation and Control (I&C) systems in accordance with UK nuclear and safety standards.
- Review and produce technical documentation, including Functional Design Specifications (FDS), Loop Diagrams, and Cause & Effect Matrices.
- Support system integration, commissioning, and site acceptance testing (SAT/FAT) of control systems.
- Liaise with multidisciplinary teams — electrical, mechanical, and systems engineers — to coordinate plant operations.
- Ensure compliance with IEC 61508, BS EN 61513, and ONR safety class requirements.
- Participate in hazard analysis (HAZOP, FMEA) and provide technical support during installation and commissioning.
Qualifications
Required Skills:
- Degree in Instrumentation and Control Engineering (or Chemical/Electrical Engineering with I&C experience).
- Proven experience in I&C system design, specification, and validation.
- Hands-on experience with PLC and DCS systems (e.g. Siemens, Schneider, Emerson, or ABB).
- Knowledge of instrumentation selection and calibration (pressure, temperature, flow, level).
- Experience preparing/reviewing FDS, Loop Diagrams, and Cause & Effect Matrices.
- Familiarity with system integration, commissioning, and site acceptance testing (SAT/FAT).
- Understanding of Safety Integrity Levels (SIL) and control philosophy.
- Background in nuclear, energy, defence, oil & gas, or other safety-critical industries.
Desirable Skills:
- Experience with Allen Bradley systems.
- Understanding of cybersecurity requirements for control systems.
- Familiarity with change control, configuration management, and technical assurance processes.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Engineering
- OR
- A highly relevant technical background from nuclear sector working on control system
