Battery Characterisation Engineer

  • Full-time

Company Description

At Allye, our innovative smart energy storage systems are redefining the way batteries are designed, connected, distributed, and utilised to the grid. Flexible and modular, our systems are intelligently managed, making energy storage more affordable and accessible for everyone.

Job Description

We are seeking a Battery Characterisation Engineer who brings deep scientific understanding of battery behaviour combined with the hands-on engineering instinct to build the tools and systems that put that knowledge to work. Ideally you come from a research or applied science background with applied experience at an establish company or startup, who is equally comfortable designing experiments, developing instrumentation, and turning data into actionable insights.

Your expertise must be at the battery pack level as we need someone who understands how packs behave in the real world: how individual cell variation propagates to pack performance, how thermal and electrical architecture shapes degradation, and how to design and interpret pack-level characterisation programmes that yield commercially meaningful insight. You will develop the methodologies, algorithms, and data systems that enable Allye to assess and integrate repurposed EV packs from multiple manufacturers, and translate those findings into better sourcing decisions and longer-lasting BESS deployments.

Working closely with our embedded software team, you will lead the engineering of our portable battery testing kit (SPEX) - treating it as a product, not just a script. You will own our battery data lake, spanning data from our test container, field-deployed BESS, and in-service battery packs, and generate the insights that directly influence how we source batteries and how our control strategy evolves by application and market. This is a critical role in enabling Allye’s mission to repurpose EV batteries at scale for energy storage applications.

Responsibilities

Characterisation & Testing

  • Lead repurposed EV battery pack characterisation using remote diagnostics and advanced prognostics to determine SoH and State of Usability (SoU)
  • Develop and execute battery testing programmes including capacity testing, IR measurement, cell voltage uniformity analysis, and degradation tracking
  • Lead battery cycling and testing operations, driving reduction in lead time and throughput of batteries for BESS assembly
  • Interpret BMS fault codes, error states, and diagnostic data across packs
  • Develop battery grading and sorting criteria to support pricing models and pack selection for BESS integration

Data Management & Insights

  • Own and manage Allye’s battery data lake, consolidating data from the testing and in-service packs into a structured, queryable repository
  • Generate insights from operational and test data to support better battery sourcing decisions and better deployment considerations by application
  • Analyse in-service degradation data to understand how packs behave across different BESS applications and use cases, directly informing control strategy development and differentiated control strategies by market or application
  • Build dashboards and reporting tools to surface battery health trends to the engineering team, feeding into product development and field service decisions

Software & Controls Development

  • Engineer and own our portable battery testing kit (SPEX) - developing it as a robust, repeatable product fit for field use
  • Develop SPEX hardware design considerations, electronics robustness, and iterating the back-end assessment system to improve throughput and reliability
  • Manage projects to develop CAN control of battery packs from a range of OEM, including controller development
  • Support the development of software tools for BMS data extraction, and automated test execution using Python and embedded C/C++
  • Implement and validate SoH/SoU estimation algorithms, combining empirical methods with machine learning approaches

Integration & Collaboration

  • Support battery testing and pairing activities for BESS assembly
  • Manage PhD students and academic research partnerships into SoU development and battery degradation modelling
  • Collaborate with embedded software engineers on BMS integration
  • Document characterisation methodologies, test procedures, and create Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)

Qualifications

Must-haves

  • Degree in Electrical or Electronic Engineering
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience working with EV batteries at a pack level
  • Understanding of lithium-ion battery fundamentals including cell balancing, thermal management, and degradation mechanisms
  • Experience with SoH/SoC estimation algorithms and battery modelling
  • Strong Python skills for data analysis, automation, and algorithm development
  • Experience building or managing structured data pipelines or data lakes — including ingestion, storage, and querying of time-series battery data
  • Hardware product design including PCB-level thinking, signal integrity, sensor selection, and the robustness requirements of a portable field instrument s
  • Experience with embedded systems programming in C/C++ for microcontrollers (ESP32, STM32, or similar)
  • CAN bus communication protocols experience: CAN, UDS, OBD-II, ISO-TP, and protocol analysis, DBC and BMS communication,
  • Experience with CAN analysis tools: Vector CANoe, SavvyCAN, PCAN, Kvaser
  • Hands-on experience with battery testing equipment: cyclers, impedance analysers, data loggers
  • Ability to work across the full development cycle from strategic methodology design through to hands-on execution
  • Self-motivated with excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail

Nice-to-haves

  • A research-based postgraduate qualification (MEng, MSc, or PhD) in battery systems, energy storage, or applied electrochemistry is highly valued
  • Experience reverse engineering CAN protocols for EV batteries
