Senior Infrastructure Engineer
- Full-time
- Business Areas: Technology Services
- Location: Manchester
- Department: Service Delivery and Infrastructure
Job Description
Build the infrastructure people can rely on.
At AJ Bell, we believe investing should feel good. Behind every reliable, secure and easy-to-use investing experience is technology people can depend on. As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you'll play an important role in making that possible, helping to keep our services resilient, secure and ready to support our growing business.
You'll be a senior technical contributor within our Infrastructure team, taking ownership of the design and delivery of medium-sized infrastructure changes and projects. You'll bring deep technical expertise, understand how systems and services work together, and help ensure our infrastructure is built to the right standards, with security, resilience and long-term supportability at its heart.
This is a hands-on role with scope to make a real difference. Alongside delivering complex technical work, you'll guide and support other engineers, work closely with colleagues across Technology Services, and help us manage risk, improve our services and deliver reliable outcomes for our customers.
You'll help ensure our infrastructure continues to meet the needs of a growing, regulated business, supporting our operational resilience and regulatory responsibilities, including Consumer Duty.
What you'll bring
Infrastructure experience and technical delivery
- Strong experience in an Infrastructure Engineer or similar technical role, preferably gained in a Financial Services, regulated or business-critical technology environment.
- Experience designing, delivering and supporting production infrastructure services.
- Ability to own technical design and delivery for medium-sized infrastructure changes or projects.
- Strong understanding of dependencies between infrastructure technologies, applications, networks, identity, security and operational processes.
- Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and support timely incident and problem resolution.
- Experience producing technical documentation, implementation plans, support handover material and standards documentation.
- Experience working within change control, operational governance and service management processes.
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to explain technical risks, decisions and trade-offs clearly.
- Ability to coach, guide and support less experienced engineers.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver work to agreed timescales.
- Strong understanding of security, resilience, monitoring, capacity and maintainability considerations.
- Experience working with suppliers and third-party support providers where required.
Technical knowledge
We're looking for broad infrastructure expertise across a range of technologies. Experience with the following will be valuable.
- VMware technologies including Dell VxRail hyperconverged infrastructure, Aria Suite, NSX, HCX, vSAN, VCF and VMC.
- Load balancing technologies such as VMware AVI, NSX or equivalent.
- Fortinet SD-WAN and firewall technologies, FortiManager, FortiAnalyzer and FortiClient VPN or equivalent.
- Microsoft Windows Server and Red Hat Enterprise Linux server configuration and management.
- Monitoring and observability tooling such as SolarWinds, Opsgenie, Grafana, Prometheus or equivalent.
- Storage, backup and disaster recovery technologies, including SAN/NAS, replication, snapshotting and recovery testing concepts.
- Identity and access technologies such as Active Directory, ADFS, SSO and MFA.
- Cisco networking technologies, Cisco ISE and Catalyst Centre or equivalent demonstrable networking experience.
- Infrastructure performance and capacity monitoring, planning and remediation.
- AWS, Azure, Kubernetes, container platform concepts and cloud-based infrastructure patterns desirable.
- Infrastructure as Code, automation, scripting and CI/CD practices desirable with experience of Terraform preferred
- Security tooling and practices including patch management, vulnerability management, SIEM, EDR, PAM and micro-segmentation desirable.
- ITIL service management and PRINCE2, Agile, Scrum or equivalent project delivery experience beneficial.
How you'll work
Technical expertise is important, but so is the way you apply it. You'll bring:
- The ability to work through complexity and ambiguity, gathering the information and perspectives needed to make sound decisions.
- Good judgement, ownership and self-awareness when balancing business needs, risk, security and operational impact.
- A customer-focused mindset, understanding how reliable infrastructure supports service quality and the customer experience.
- An appreciation of how Infrastructure connects with wider Technology Services teams and business outcomes.
- Clear communication, constructive challenge, useful feedback and a willingness to share knowledge.
- A considered approach to technical decisions, weighing evidence, available options and long-term maintainability.
- A collaborative approach to improving services, reducing operational risk and supporting lasting change.
- The ability to build strong working relationships across Technology Services and the wider business.
