Job Description
Position Summary
The Sr. Overhead Line (OHL) Engineer – High Voltage Transmission is responsible for the design, analysis, and engineering of overhead transmission lines for high voltage power networks. The role involves performing electrical and mechanical calculations, developing line routing and tower designs, and supporting project delivery from concept through construction.
The engineer ensures transmission line reliability, safety, and compliance with international standards while contributing to efficient and optimized transmission system designs.
Key Responsibilities
1. Transmission Line Design and Engineering
- Develop detailed engineering designs for HV and EHV overhead transmission lines (typically 110kV – 400kV+).
- Perform electrical and mechanical calculations required for transmission line design.
- Prepare and review:
- Route layouts and alignment sheets
- Tower spotting
- Conductor and ground wire selection
- Insulator string configurations
- Support tower loading calculations and structural inputs for tower design teams.
- Define clearances and right-of-way requirements according to standards.
2. Transmission Line Calculations and Technical Studies
Perform and verify typical OHL engineering calculations, including:
Electrical calculations
- Conductor current carrying capacity (ampacity)
- Corona and radio interference calculations
- Electric field calculations
- Line impedance, resistance and reactance
- Power transfer capability of transmission lines
- Ground wire shielding angle calculations
- Lightning performance and shielding analysis
Mechanical calculations
- Sag and tension calculations for conductors and earth wires
- Conductor blowout under wind conditions
- Temperature loading cases (everyday, maximum temperature, ice)
- Clearance verification under maximum sag conditions
- Structure loading cases (wind, ice, broken wire conditions)
Foundation and loading interface
- Tower loading trees and load combinations
- Interface with structural engineers for tower and foundation design.
Engineering calculations are typically performed using PLS-CADD / PLS-TOWER or equivalent software tools.
3. Project Engineering Support
- Assist in project planning and engineering coordination for transmission line projects.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams including:
- Structural engineers, Geotechnical engineers, Power system engineers, Environmental specialists
4. Standards, Compliance and Quality
- Ensure designs comply with international and regional standards such as:
- IEC, IEEE, EN standards, British Standards and National Grid / DNO technical specifications.
- Apply company engineering procedures and quality assurance processes.
- Participate in technical reviews and design verification processes.
5. Field Engineering and Construction Support
- Provide engineering support during:
- Transmission line construction
- Stringing operations
- Tower erection
- Review field modifications and resolve technical issues during construction.
6. Technical Documentation
Prepare and review engineering documentation such as:
- Transmission line design reports
- Calculation notes
- Tower spotting reports
- Conductor sag and tension charts
- Technical specifications
- Bill of quantities
- Construction drawings and alignment sheets
Provide clear documentation to support design reviews, client approvals, and project audits.
Qualifications
Mandatory Qualifications
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Civil Engineering, or Structural Engineering
Experience
- 6–7 years of experience in overhead transmission line engineering
- Experience working on HV transmission line projects (110kV – 400kV or higher)
Technical Skills
- Strong understanding of:
- Transmission line electrical principles
- Mechanical behavior of conductors and structures
- Clearance and safety requirements
- PLS-CADD, PLS-Tower/Pole advanced level
- Experience performing sag-tension and transmission line design calculations
- Familiarity with transmission line routing and tower spotting
Soft Skills
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Ability to work in multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Good communication and coordination skills.
Nice to Have
- Experience working on international transmission line projects
- Knowledge of EHV transmission line design (400kV+)
- Experience supporting construction or site engineering activities.
