Purpose
AbbVie is seeking a strategic, collaborative and execution-focused leader to oversee and grow our global volunteering portfolio, engaging employees across 60+ countries in meaningful community impact opportunities.
The Associate Director, Employee Engagement & Impact will lead our efforts to increase employee participation in volunteering and community impact programs, delivering exceptional volunteer experiences, strengthening nonprofit and strategic partnerships, and ensuring operational excellence across AbbVie's global volunteering ecosystem.
This role is responsible for advancing employee engagement through the design, implementation, and continuous growth of enterprise-wide volunteer programs. The Associate Director will drive measurable increases in participation, strengthen employee and nonprofit partner engagement, leverage technology and analytics to improve program effectiveness, and help scale a best-in-class global employee volunteering ecosystem that advances community impact objectives and AbbVie’s culture of service.
The successful candidate is able to combine operational excellence with developing long-term employee engagement strategies and thrive in a highly collaborative, matrixed environment.
Key Responsibilities
Employee Engagement & Impact Strategy
Lead the evolution and execution of AbbVie's global employee volunteering portfolio.
Establish annual engagement goals, participation targets, and success measures aligned with AbbVie's priorities.
Identify opportunities to increase employee participation across geographies, functions, and employee populations.
Monitor industry trends and innovative practices to continuously strengthen AbbVie's employee impact offerings and experiences.
Develop and maintain strategic relationships with nonprofit organizations, community partners, vendors, and service providers.
Collaborate with internal functions including Communications, Human Resources, Operations, BTS, Legal, Compliance, and regional affiliate teams.
Global Program Delivery
Lead the planning, execution, and continuous improvement of AbbVie's global volunteering portfolio, including Week of Possibilities and year-round employee engagement initiatives.
Ensure programs are delivered consistently, efficiently, and with measurable community impact.
Partner with affiliates and internal stakeholders to scale participation while maintaining flexibility for local needs.
Recommend new opportunities that respond to employee interests and evolving community priorities.
Employee Experience & Participation Growth
Design meaningful experiences that make volunteering easy, accessible, and rewarding for employees worldwide.
Gather employee feedback and participation insights to improve program effectiveness and user experience.
Serve as a trusted advisor to leaders seeking to leverage volunteering and community engagement as part of team culture and employee engagement efforts.
Operational Excellence & Governance
Oversee global volunteer platform governance, operational processes, reporting standards, and program administration.
Ensure data integrity, compliance, and accurate tracking of participation and impact metrics.
Manage vendor relationships and drive ongoing process improvement initiatives.
Create scalable resources, tools, and governance structures that improve efficiency and employee satisfaction.
Measurement, Reporting & Executive Communications
Analyze engagement data, participation trends, and impact outcomes to inform strategy and decision making.
Develop executive presentations, dashboards, and reporting for senior leaders and governance bodies.
Translate data and results into compelling narratives that demonstrate employee and community impact.
Measure program effectiveness and identify opportunities for continuous improvement and growth.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Required
10 years of progressive experience in employee engagement or corporate volunteering programs, nonprofit leadership, community engagement, corporate philanthropy, or related functions.
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Business Administration, Public Policy, Nonprofit Management, Human Resources, Corporate Responsibility, or a related field.
Demonstrated success managing large-scale employee volunteering programs involving multiple business functions, geographic regions, external nonprofit partners, and executive stakeholders.
Proven track record of growing employee volunteering programs year-over-year through strategic planning, stakeholder influence, technology optimization, and data-driven program management.
Demonstrated ability to influence cross-functional stakeholders and drive alignment without direct authority in highly matrixed environments.
Experience leading external vendor relationships and technology platforms that support employee engagement and volunteering (e.g. Benevity, YourCause, Cybergrants, etc.)
Strong analytical capabilities with experience using participation data, engagement metrics, reporting dashboards, and trend analysis to evaluate program effectiveness and inform leadership decisions.
Proven project and portfolio management skills, including oversight of multiple concurrent initiatives, budgets, vendors, timelines, and stakeholder expectations.
Exceptional written, verbal, and presentation communication skills with experience developing executive-facing communications and strategic recommendations.
Demonstrated success driving continuous improvement, innovation, and operational excellence within employee engagement or social impact programs.
Preferred
Understanding of international volunteer program infrastructure, country-specific volunteering practices, charitable regulations, and affiliate engagement models.
Familiarity with CSR, ESG, corporate citizenship, and social impact reporting frameworks.
Experience partnering with HR technology, IT, and vendor teams to support employee demographic integrations, organizational hierarchy updates, data governance, user provisioning, and reporting accuracy.
Fluency or professional working proficiency in one or more additional languages.
Ability to travel as needed to support employee engagement initiatives, partner meetings, and key enterprise events.
