Job Description
This is a remote position with up to 75% domestic travel required. Candidates may reside anywhere in the United States.
The Associate Director, Reimbursement Strategy, is responsible for supporting the US Market Access business unit’s comprehensive strategy and tactical execution plan for: 1) execution of a comprehensive reimbursement strategy for a range of current and future reimbursed products, 2) engaging in select cross-functional collaboration and on-going assessment of industry trends in the medically reimbursed space in a manner supportive of the company’s priorities, 3) supporting Government Affairs, as needed, in building strategic physician relationships and industry partnerships with societies and other KOLs/institutions for reimbursement strategy.
The Associate Director must partner closely with various cross-functional individuals/teams and work effectively with multiple internal and external stakeholders (i.e., Executive Leadership, Marketing Leadership, Sales Leadership, Market Access, Government Affairs, Medical, Compliance and Legal) in a matrixed environment to achieve targeted management bonus objectives (MBOs) and established key performance indicators (KPIs). This individual will also be responsible for informing and educating internal stakeholders on evolving strategic alliances, the company’s reimbursement approach, and health care trends, as well as assessing and clarifying the company’s opportunity and risk associated within their assigned therapeutic areas.
The Associate Director routinely engages externally with professional societies to build and maintain relationships independent of specific business requests, helping ensure compliance with appropriate engagement practices. This role is expected to engage through in-person relationships with physician leaders, professional medical associations, and other key influencers to support reimbursement and policy initiatives.
Support Comprehensive Reimbursement Strategy for AbbVie’s Reimbursed Product Portfolio in Assigned Therapeutic Areas
- Develop and execute AbbVie current and future reimbursed product coverage, coding, and payment strategies.
- Collaborate with AbbVie brand teams to align product reimbursement strategy and execute in accordance with annual marketing brand plans.
- Partner with Government Affairs, Market Access, GMAP, and the Health Policy Account Executive team to develop and implement key components of AbbVie reimbursement and market access strategy.
- Work with various brands to leverage reimbursement expertise and technical knowledge to gain patient/product access while reducing reimbursement and access challenges.
- Monitor and interpret the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) policy, legislative, and regulatory activities with an understanding of organizational impact.
- As directed, represent AbbVie’s interests engaging at conferences such as Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) and American Medical Association (AMA) meetings in coordination with associated professional medical associations/societies.
- In-person engagement with external customers, including Specialty Pharmacy and field-based accounts providing top level reimbursement support.
Engage in Cross-Functional Collaboration with Key Internal and External Stakeholders
- Work as part of AbbVie’s matrixed organization while developing and executing annual reimbursement strategy and long-range business plan.
- Provide executive presence and effective communication to successfully interact with high-profile internal and external stakeholders and ensure delivery on the value proposition of AbbVie physician reimbursement strategy function, initiatives, opportunities, and issues.
- Maintain on-going understanding of key internal and external trends affecting physician relationships, reimbursement, professional medical. associations/societies, patient support/advocacy groups, and patient foundations, as well as assimilate and distill complex medical knowledge, then communicate across a wide variety of audiences.
- Displaying outstanding verbal and written communications skills, excellent people skills, and an ability to adapt one’s approach when faced with a challenge by shifting priorities and adjusting to a rapidly changing environment.
- Serve as the liaison between the US Market Access business unit and Government Affairs on critical CMS policy, legislative and regulatory matters that impact physicians and professional medical associations/societies, as well as managing third-party consulting relationships.
Partner with Government Affairs in Build High-Value Physician Relationships, Strategic Industry Partnerships and Alliance Formation
- As needed, support established and cultivate new peer-level relationships and strategic partnerships based on trust and respect with AbbVie physician leadership, professional medical associations/societies and key external organizations that increase the effectiveness of industry interactions with AbbVie in collaboration with Government Affairs and Market Access.
- Work effectively with internal and external executive-level stakeholders, constituencies, consultants, and third-party organizations.
- Supporting multiple professional societies and key external stakeholders. Regular travel is required to maintain these relationships through routine in-person meetings, conferences, and other engagement opportunities.

Qualifications
Education
- BA/BS or above, MBA preferred.
Experience and Knowledge
- A minimum of 10 years’ experience in sales leadership and/or marketing, reimbursement, and/or market access.
- Proficient knowledge of medically reimbursed and medical device industries along with the buy-and-bill and specialty pharmacy market.
- Strong understanding of the US reimbursement systems and payment methodologies.
- Understanding of the pharmaceutical and medical device regulatory and compliance environment.
- Comprehensive knowledge of reimbursement strategy, Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS), Category I and III CPT code formation and extension, International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision, Clinical Modification (ICD-10-CM) coding.
- Experience/knowledge working with the resource-based relative value scale (RBRVS) and the RVS Update Committee (RUC) process.
- Understanding of key public and private payer policy infrastructure, coverage, trends, and current business challenges.
- Prior involvement and competence in leading local, regional, and national initiatives.
- Demonstrated ability to work in a matrixed team environment and proactively collaborate, mentor and lead with and without authority.
Essential Skills and Abilities

- 60% of the role’s travel is to corporate office locations, eg. Mettawa, IL; Irvine, CA; and Madison, NJ
- 40% of the role's travel is dedicated to serving as an on-site representative at external healthcare meetings, professional society events, conferences, and key customer accounts where reimbursement expertise and relationship management are needed.
