Job Description

The Director will help identify opportunities for AI solutions to improve AbbVie’s clinical and development performance and advance functional/therapeutic area priorities while maintaining alignment with the overarching R&D Artificial Intelligence framework and priorities.  They will act as a key member of the CDO Capabilities Leadership Team, responsible for driving speed, performance, quality, and efficiency in clinical trials.  The Director will collaborate with scientists, clinicians, study teams, data scientists, and AI specialists within functional/therapeutic area and across R&D to identify, prioritize, and lead projects involving the development, adoption, and continuous improvement of AI solutions. They will closely collaborate with the existing teams and initiatives across AbbVie R&D (Convergence, Quantum Leap) to ensure broad alignment and coordination of AbbVie’s broader efforts. The Director will ensure that projects create a substantial return on investment and a meaningful impact on advancement of the AbbVie pipeline of new medicines and/key functional/therapeutic area or R&D priorities.

  • Lead the identification, execution, implementation, adoption, and continuous improvement of AI solutions that enhance clinical trial performance, speed, quality, and efficiency.
  • Translate clinical and therapeutic needs into AI-driven solutions, ensuring alignment with strategic R&D priorities.
  • Collaborate closely with scientists, clinicians, study teams, and AI specialists to prioritize and lead AI projects.
  • Ensure alignment and coordination of AI initiatives with existing programs such as Convergence and Quantum Leap.
  • Manage resource allocation, project budgets, and deliverables to ensure substantial ROI and impactful outcomes.
  • Facilitate knowledge transfer and best practices in AI application within clinical trial contexts.
  • Stay abreast of emerging AI technologies and methodologies to inform strategic decision-making.
  • Act as a strategic consultant on AI integration within therapeutic areas to solve complex clinical challenges.
  • Influence the talent strategy within the assigned function/therapeutic area to continually enhance the digital skills and acumen of scientists and leaders to align with the Convergence data integration strategy.
  • Lead, mentor, and develop direct reports to foster a high-performing team environment, ensuring alignment with project goals and professional growth objectives.

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree with 12+ years of experience in clinical development, data analytics, and AI applications.
  • Proven track record of leading successful AI projects in a clinical or biomedical domain.
  • Deep understanding of clinical trial processes and challenges, with the ability to translate these into AI solutions.
  • Strong background in AI, machine learning, and data science, with practical experience applying these in clinical settings.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, capable of engaging cross-functional teams.
  • Familiarity with regulatory environments and compliance requirements related to AI in clinical trials.
  • Experience managing projects with complex, multidisciplinary teams and budgets.
  • Demonstrated ability to innovate and drive change in a large, matrixed organization.
  • Proven experience in leading, mentoring, and developing direct reports, fostering a collaborative and high-performance team environment.

Key Stakeholders:

AI Leads from other R&D functions; CDO, R&D Operations, Clinical Sciences, and Clinical Development Leadership Teams, VPs/senior leaders from R&D functions and other internal AbbVie collaborators such as Development Sciences and Medical Affairs; Matrix team influence including study teams and data scientists at all levels.

 

*Preference is for role to be office based in Lake County, IL, but may be potential for the role to be remote.
