Job Description
Your primary role as the Design System Manager involves transforming Zooplus' design system into a readily consumable resource, empowering multiple cross-functional product teams to ensure the inclusive consistent, user-friendly, and efficient implementation of Zooplus' digital channels. This includes coordinating the design, development, maintenance, evolution and adoption of our design system.
Responsibilities:
Management
- Coordinate efforts with your vertical team lead and team to ensure a consistent user experience of Zooplus' digital channels (UI components, interaction patterns, accessibility etc.). Actively work against design debt causing inconsistent UI designs & redundant implementations
- Proactively create and prioritize work packages maintaining order and tracking on jira of requests
- Adopt efforts to ensure fast technical roll-out (design to code) of re-designs (e.g.,brand/visual & accessibility)
Relationship Building:
- Relationship management with frontend architect, devs and designers to ensure high quality in end (design) to end (code) design system productization.
- Manage relationships and feedback channels to core users and stakeholders such as, Director of design, Brand Design, Product Designers, Developers & Marketing and product owners.
- Manage onboarding and relationship with external designers and developers located outside the European Union.
Guidelines
- Create a single source of truth for documentation of UI components, design decisions, processes (contribution, UI design alignment across products) and style guidelines. Actively work on the documentation of the points mentioned.
Processes
- Ensure alignment amongst product designers and UI design consistency across different product areas by owning & facilitating rituals such as design system open office sessions or UI design reviews and QA
- Ensure systematic growth of component libraries to be used for different products through owning & facilitating a contribution process that is aligned with frontend engineering
- Create transparency about design system work including communication about milestones, roadmaps & releases to different stakeholders.
Libraries
- Continue growing the Figma component library architecture including file structures and findability or in the correspondent tool.
- Ensure that Figma component libraries are in synch with code libraries in terms of component availability, nomenclature, variants, tokens/variables, behaviors etc. also align with the graphics about branding.
- In collaboration with frontend engineering, continuously assess existing component libraries to identify optimization potential that is up to par with current industry trends & best practices for design and code library artefacts (e.g., tokenization/variables)
Accessibility:
- Accessibility Expertise: Strong knowledge of WCAG standards, EN 301 549, and upcoming European Accessibility Act (EAA) requirements, with experience in implementing accessible design practices.
- Inclusive Design Leadership: Proven ability to lead the integration of inclusive design principles into digital products, ensuring accessibility for all users.
- Compliance and Strategy: Experience ensuring legal compliance with accessibility regulations, particularly the EAA, and driving accessibility strategies within design systems.
- Technical Proficiency: Skilled in using accessibility tools (e.g., screen readers, contrast analyzers) and implementing ARIA specifications within design systems.
Qualifications
- Bachelor/Master degree in product design, HCI, computer science or related fields
- 5 years of experience as a design system designer or manager, product design or related roles
- Strong leadership and management skills incorporating excellent communication, alignment & mediation skills
- Understanding / practical experience in product ownership (vision, strategy, metrics, ticketing) is a plus
- Very strong design skills:
- Solid understanding of atomic design or alternative concepts and how to put them into practice
- Strong UI design skills
- Strong ability to set visual direction for UI
- Strong knowledge about state-of-the-art UI components & interaction patterns for web shops
- Experience with frontend development technologies such as HTML, CSS & JavaScript is a plus
- Experience working with Jira & Confluence
- Portfolio showcasing design system work
