Job Description

We are seeking an innovative computational biologist to help drive Zai Laboratory’s translational efforts. This will include aiding the identification of new targets, developing patient stratification strategies, and helping guide the development of Zai’s clinical pipeline. The successful candidate will have a proven track-record of converting multi-omic datasets into clinically-actionable insights.



  • Collaborate in leading computational efforts with multi-disciplinary teams, and apply cutting-edge computational approaches to gain maximum insights from large, multi-omic pre-clinical, clinical, and real-world datasets.
  • Collaborate with cancer biologists, immunologists, chemists, statisticians, and develop computational strategies and build tools for target discovery, patient stratification, and development of pharmacodynamic and predictive genomic signatures.
  • Effectively communicate findings at internal and external meetings.


  • Master in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, engineering, cancer biology, immunology, genetics, or similar field, with 8+ years of experience.
  • Or Ph.D. in bioinformatics, computational biology, statistics, engineering, cancer biology, immunology, genetics, or similar field, with 2+ years of experience.
  • Extensive experience performing data analysis and visualization using Python and/or R required. A strong background in statistical methods such as data normalization techniques, distribution comparison, enrichment analysis, clustering methods, and multiple hypothesis correction is a must. Ability to lead decisions on which data-science/statistical techniques to apply to answer biologically-driven questions is a requirement.
  • Proven history applying data-science techniques to NGS or other -omics datasets is required, with oncology experience highly desired. Strong preference for candidates practiced in building clinically-actionable prognostic and/or predictive models, especially in the biopharma industry. Previous experience interrogating large public datasets such as TCGA, GTEx, or others a plus.
  • Current capability to initiate and maintain development environments for data-science experiments required, such using as Docker, Jupyter Notebooks and/or R-studio. This includes familiarity with CLI tools for source tracking (e.g. git), data retrieval (e.g. rsync, sftp), at least one database query language (e.g. MySQL). Experience with big data tooling (e.g. Spark) preferred.
  • Excellent independent problem-solving and collaboration skills are a must. Demonstrable ability to clearly communicate computationally-derived results with non-bioinformaticians required. Strong track record of productivity, as evidenced by driving projects forward and robust publications, is highly preferred. Candidates should be enthusiastic, open-minded, and active in scientific development and personal growth.
