Company Description

Wolt is a technology company that makes it incredibly easy to discover and get the best restaurants, grocery stores and other local shops delivered to your home or office. Wolt works together with over 30,000 restaurant and retail partners as well as with over 60,000 courier partners across 23 countries and 129 cities.

Our apps (iOS and Android) have the industry’s highest reviews, largely because of our customer-centric approach to how we build our products and operations. For example, our customer service team responds in a matter of seconds, in the customer’s own language.

We’ve raised more than €707M in financing from renowned U.S. and European based investors, such as ICONIQ Capital, Tiger Global, DST, Prosus, KKR, Coatue, 83North, Goldman Sachs, Highland Europe and EQT Ventures & EQT Growth, among others. We've also been fortunate enough to receive some appreciation and recognition for our hard work along the way: Apple selected Wolt’s app as their Editors' Choice, Wired named the company one of the "Hottest Startups in Europe," Forbes included our CEO Miki Kuusi on its 30-under-30 in Consumer Tech list, and the Nordic Startup Awards named Wolt Company of the Year.

In 2020, the Financial Times named us Europe’s second fastest growing company. We’re still expanding rapidly and are looking for more talented individuals to join us. If you are passionate about cutting-edge technology, great food, and making an impact in your city, then Wolt just might be for you.

Wolt is more than just a food and retail delivery operation – in fact we are built upon a solid foundation of state-of-the-art technology. Our internal tooling enables us to ramp up new cities efficiently and provide excellent customer service, our own logistics platform allows us to optimise our couriers' work to get you the food you want as fast as possible, and our restaurant platform allows restaurants to offer exciting food experiences for our customers in an optimal way.

We work in small teams with high ownership, with each team focusing on a key area of the Wolt product stack. Each and every one of our product team members has a say in where we are going and what solutions we implement. We work with a passion, but we haven't forgotten how to have fun along the way!

Job Description

Are you interested in being part of building a service that is unique to the tastes of our over 14 million users? Wolt is looking for multiple Senior Scala Backend Engineers to join our different engineering teams across the product development organization. We strive to always use the latest Scala version in our services which allows us to benefit from the latest language features. If you are functional programming and would like to be surrounded by like-minded people, we have a lot to offer.

Examples of teams using Scala as their main tool in the backend development:

The logistics team is responsible for making our logistics scale with the insane growth phase and connecting people and hard-working couriers in global cities of millions e.g. Tokyo & Berlin. In the end, the challenges are related to questions such as how to simply divide the data into so small pieces that normal databases can handle it. So you need to be a fearless problem-solver like Gyro Gearloose with experience in writing production level Scala. Thus far, the team has mostly used Akka, Play & Slick but there’s also Http4s and Typelevel. scala being used in newer projects.

The courier team is responsible for developing and maintaining the Courier mobile application and its backend. The team strives towards an outstanding user experience and builds internal tools for courier life cycle operations. The courier application and tooling are at the heart of Wolt and a high priority in our product roadmap. They build solutions that scale with the high-speed increase in the number of users! 🚀 The data you get to play around with is diverse, ranging from real-time operations data to masses of historical data to be connected with. You would be one of the critical persons for developing the courier tools' future, helping create tools to balance the demand and supply ratio or implement dataflows between microservices.

Last year, we started expanding our delivery offering into new verticals with a variety of deliverable goods. Some of these verticals include groceries, merchandise, flowers, clothes, and toys, all referred to as “Retail”. The Retail Merchant team builds products and tooling to help them onboard smoothly, manage their assortment on Wolt, and keep their in-store operations running efficiently.  The retail merchant team is responsible for making Wolt a great platform for the retailers. Over the past year, the team has focused on projects like building a tailored app for the retailers, automatic refunds, supporting venues with a huge number of items, and keeping track of the venue's inventory. The team has built their new backend services with technologies like Scala, Kafka, Kubernetes, AWS, and Websockets.

In any of these teams, you can work in our tech hubs in Helsinki or Berlin you can work fully remotely elsewhere Finland, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, or Estonia now and in the future! You can read more about our remote setup here

Qualifications

You might be the one we are looking for if you are an engineer with several years of experience in designing and building top class software. Overall experience in functional programming is a must but more important than any specific programming language is your expertise in building systems at scale.

We value an attitude of constant improvements and also the ability to create entirely new features from scratch. An entrepreneurial mindset of taking ownership of what you've built is a must. Join us with a huge opportunity to impact how the Wolt operations scale!

Additional Information

The compensation will be a negotiable combination of monthly pay and Wolt stock options. The latter make it exceptionally easy to be excited about our company growing and doing well, as you'll own a piece of the pie.

If you want to check up on your application or have any further questions about the position you can turn to Talent Acquisition Partner, Noora Markoff, [email protected]. During July, there will be delays in checking the applications but we will get back to you August!
