Senior Backend Engineer - Bazel Team

  • Full-time
  • City: Vilnius

Company Description

Wix makes it possible for anyone to succeed online.

Since 2006, we've grown to around 5,300 employees in 22 countries, launched over 40 products, and serve over 282 million users and their visitors worldwide.

At Wix, we push you to innovate, evolve in non-traditional ways, and collaborate. We operate in small teams that work closely together at a high level.

Although we're already industry leaders in web creation and business, our work is nowhere near done.  Our goal is to become the main engine of the Internet so we can create a more open web for all.

We're proud to be an equal opportunity employer.  Wix was built around the idea that everyone has the right to be successful, online. This same vision defines us as an employer: creating a work environment where everyone is welcome, and anyone has the right to succeed.

Job Description

At Wix, we care deeply about developer experience — and fast, reliable builds are a huge part of that. Our Bazel team builds the tools, pipelines, and integrations that keep more than 500 backend developers productive every day. We’re tackling challenges of scale, performance, and developer velocity in one of the largest monorepos in the industry (20GB+).

We use Bazel as our build system and work across Scala, Java, Python, Starlark, Go, and Bash to build and maintain the internal tooling that powers our CI/CD pipelines and local development environments. We focus on improving build performance, dependency management, and developer workflows — all to make builds faster, more reliable, and more scalable.

As a senior backend engineer in the Bazel team, you’ll:

  • Be responsible for all aspects of software development - plan, design, build, and maintain our systems while working closely with Wix developers to improve their day-to-day experience and eliminate velocity killers

  • Build, and maintain highly scalable backend services providing unique CI/CD experiences to support Wix’s backend code

  • Create infrastructure systems as needed by the DevEx group

  • Design and implement integrations for internal and external systems such as GitHub, AWS, EngFlow

Qualifications

  • In-depth understanding of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP) and SOLID principles

  • Skilled in debugging and investigating production issues and you’re also able to recognize and address bad code

  • You have a good knowledge and interest in microservice architecture

  • You’re responsible and can work independently

  • You actively keep up with industry trends and developments and you’re continuously searching for better solutions

  • Quick grasp of large and complex systems and their inner workings

  • Familiar with software engineering best practices (testing, code reviews, immutability, scalability, etc.)

  • Knowledgeable about bad practices and anti-patterns

An advantage if you:

  • Have experience using Bazel or other large-scale build systems (e.g., Buck, Pants)

  • Are familiar with Scala

  • Have experience building scalable web services using non-blocking or asynchronous I/O frameworks (e.g., Akka HTTP, Netty, Vert.x, or similar)

  • Have worked with Docker and Kubernetes

  • Have a passion for DevEx-related topics: developer tooling, development environments, and build tools

Additional Information

We’re Bazel team, part of Wix’s Infrastructure Developer Experience (DevEx) group — a group that builds the tools and platforms empowering over 2,000 Wix engineers.

Our mission is to make development at Wix faster, smoother, and more enjoyable. We own key parts of Wix’s CI/CD ecosystem based on Bazel, which powers around 1,000 builds and 600 deployments per day.

If you’re excited by scale, impact, and building tools that make other engineers happier and more productive — this is the place for you.
