Job Description

Role Description

The Closing Machine Operator is responsible for setting up, loading and operating the closing machine, performing required inspections and making necessary adjustments to ensure the quality of the rope fabricated meets required quality specifications.  The operator is responsible for his/her personal safety and the safety of those around the closing machine. 

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Record set-up information at the start of an order.
  • Remove empty bobbins from the previously completed order and load full bobbins using appropriate lifting devices and load the center in the let-off stand.
  • Thread the closing machine by pulling strands and center through the machine and secure a hitch to the previously completed rope, making sure strands are located properly at the pre-forming head.
  • Set the proper rope-lay as required.
  • Secure, install and adjust the proper dies, pre-forming head, crushing rollers, and post-forming roller as required by the order.
  • Adjust tensions and die pressure at the beginning of an order and throughout the entire run.
  • Inspect and change tensioning devices as needed.
  • Inspect the set-change, including cutting a strand for helix-height measurement before requesting approval from the production supervisor.
  • Start lube pump as required by the order.
  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment.
  • Perform all job duties in accordance with work instructions and quality standards.

Supervisory Responsibility - None.

 

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, GED, or ability to demonstrate basic literacy and math proficiency through education, experience, or assessment
  • Must possess math skills, mechanical aptitude, and have the ability to learn to use calipers, micrometers, tape measure, feeler gauge, and basic hand tools.
  • Must be able to stand/walk on concrete floors for 10-12 - hour shifts
  • Must be able to push / pull and lift up to 50 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous manufacturing experience

Materials and Equipment Directly Used

  • Closing machine, JDE TranCollector scan guns and printers, calipers, micrometers, and hand tools.
  • Personal protective equipment, including safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, and steel-toed safety shoes.

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
  • An applicant must complete a satisfactory background check post-offer of employment.  A criminal conviction will not be an automatic bar to employment.
  • Must be willing and able to pass a post-offer drug screen and physical (if required)
