Job Description

The Department of Surgery is seeking courtesy surgical assistants. Successful candidates would have primary affiliation with Etobicoke General Hospital and be part of the Etobicoke General assistant on-call roster. There would also be opportunities to assist at Brampton Civic Hospital (both elective and on-call). Prior surgical assisting experience is preferred but not required. Excellent communication skills and the desire to contribute in a multidisciplinary team approach to patient care are needed. Remuneration is fee-for-service supplemented by an on-call stipend when applicable.

Accountabilities:

  • Managing instruments, retracting tissue, suctioning, suturing and cutting sutures
  • Maintains a sterile field and anticipates the surgeon’s needs throughout the procedure
  • Monitors the patient’s status and communicates concerns to the surgical team
  • Operates or assists with specialized surgical equipment as needed

Qualifications

  • Certificate of Registration to practice from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario
  • Prior surgical assisting experience is preferred but not a requirement
  • Excellent communication skills in English (additional languages are considered an asset as we serve a highly diverse population)
