Consumer Underwriter 

Category of Employment

Full-time; Non- Exempt. Grade 9

Position Purpose

Responsible for evaluating and rendering an approval or denial decision for credit applications for consumer, indirect automobile, mortgage, and credit cards. Assesses collateral values and credit risk and prepares written credit-approval packages or denial correspondence. Evaluates credit processing and approval and ensures compliance with Credit Union lending policies, and Federal and State regulations. Operates with substantial credit authority.

Reporting Relationships

 This position reports to the Member Support Center Supervisor.

Essential Functions and Accountabilities

  • Evaluates and verifies loan application data and credit worthiness. Computes debt ratios. Verifies employment and income as necessary. Determines value of collateral. Approves/denies or counters loans within limits of authority. Requests additional information, if required, from branch staff or auto dealers.
  • Review documents to support credit decision such as application, sales contract, income verification, and other related documentation.
  • Perform various functions including credit monitoring, audit preparation, and others as needed.
  • Maintain credit quality and service standards as defined by management.
  • Provide excellent customer service to both internal staff and external customers and business partners.
  • Provide assistance in all aspects of the application/funding process including inquiries and processing.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Federal and State regulations as well as internal policies and procedures.
  • Responsible and accountable for risk by openly exchanging ideas and opinions, elevating concerns, and personally following policies and procedures as defined.
  • Develop business relationships and build rapport with internal staff and external business  partners through open and professional communication.
  • Identify quality opportunities to cross-sell additional products and services when reviewing applications.
  • Perform routine portfolio analysis on existing loans.
  • Perform other functions as required by management
  • Maintains a thorough working knowledge of credit union history and philosophy, as well as policies and procedures of the credit union.
  • Assist other departments when necessary.
  • Assure proper maintenance, cleanliness, and security of work area, desk, equipment, etc.
  • Be knowledgeable about services offered to credit union members.
  • Demonstrate willingness to achieve professional growth through on-the-job training and educational opportunities.
  • Demonstrate willingness to participate in credit union related activities

 

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Two years of consumer loan underwriting and/or decision-making experience.

  • Experience with direct and indirect lending
  • Experience with direct and indirect underwriting
  • Experience with mortgage lending and underwriting
  • Excellent time management skills
