Job Description
The Manager, Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) – Japan is responsible for leading and driving the site EHS strategy, regulatory compliance, risk management, and continuous improvement programs to ensure a safe, healthy, and environmentally responsible workplace. This role partners closely with site leadership, operations, engineering, facilities, HR, and corporate functions to integrate EHS excellence into business operations, support operational resilience, and strengthen a proactive safety culture aligned with Western Digital’s global standards and sustainability commitments.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Lead the site EHS function
Provide overall leadership for environmental, health, and safety programs to ensure alignment with Western Digital objectives, site priorities, and Japan regulatory requirements. - Ensure regulatory compliance and governance
Direct compliance with applicable Japanese laws, permits, licenses, and reporting obligations related to occupational safety, industrial health, environmental protection, waste, and chemical management. - Drive risk management and incident prevention
Lead site-wide hazard identification, risk assessment, and control programs to reduce operational risk and prevent injuries, environmental incidents, and compliance gaps. - Manage occupational safety and health programs
Oversee EHS programs such as machine safety, contractor safety, ergonomics, industrial hygiene, emergency response, and workplace health risk control. - Lead chemical and environmental management
Manage chemical safety, hazardous materials control, waste governance, wastewater, air emissions, and pollution prevention programs to ensure disciplined operational compliance. - Strengthen emergency preparedness, response, and business continuity
Lead site emergency response planning, drills, chemical spill readiness, fire protection coordination, and support business continuity planning, crisis response, and recovery readiness for potential operational disruptions. - Lead management systems and audit readiness
Ensure effective implementation and continuous improvement of ISO 14001, ISO 45001, and internal EHS systems, including audit preparation, findings closure, and compliance assurance. - Partner with cross-functional leadership
Work closely with site leadership, operations, engineering, facilities, HR, and regional teams to integrate EHS requirements into business operations, projects, and organizational decisions. - Drive continuous improvement and performance excellence
Monitor EHS performance metrics, analyze trends, identify improvement opportunities, and lead corrective and preventive actions to strengthen compliance, operational discipline, and overall site performance. - Develop people and strengthen EHS culture
Build organizational capability through coaching, training, talent development, succession planning, and leadership engagement to strengthen EHS ownership, accountability, and culture across all levels of the organization
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree or Master's Degree in related field
- 8-10+ years of EHS / environmental / sustainability experience
- Strong knowledge of Japan regulatory requirements and Internation Safety Standard
- Lead Auditor for ISO45001 and ISO 14001
- Experience in manufacturing, high-tech, or industrial operations
- Fluent Japanese and business English
Preferred Qualifications
- Professional certification in EHS, environmental management, industrial hygiene, or lead auditor qualification.
- Experience in multinational or matrix organizations.
- Experience supporting regulatory inspections, customer audits, and corporate compliance reviews.
- Familiarity with contractor safety management, machine safety, and operational risk control in manufacturing environments.
