Job Description

Western Digital’s Security Center of Excellence (CoE) is looking for an enthusiastic system security architect to lead security design and drive best practices through the entire Flash business unit.  The security architecture team defines requirements, architectures, validation, and compliance strategy for the security solutions in various product lines including enterprise, client, retail, mobile and automotive. The role is to architect critical components for a common security platform and it’s integration into the storage controller platforms. In this role, you will be the leading system security architect, working closely with the ecosystem, system architecture, SoC, IP, firmware engineering, manufacturing, and product security assurance teams to define the requirements and architecture and drive their implementation from cradle to grave. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Track customer driven security requirements and ensures products meet customer needs 

  • Keep abreast of industry security standards and ensures implementation in time to meet anticipated customer requirements 

  • Define next generation security architecture and assurance plans and produce high quality documentation for the integrated security solution including the Root of Trust (RoT) and it’s interaction with the entire system. 

  • Architect interactions between various system components and peripherals using secure protocols and industry best practices. 

  • Lead design reviews with product security assurance, executives, engineers, and program managers to ensure high quality and design conformance. 

  • Follow a secure design through from conception to productization across multiple projects and product lines. 

  • Raise the bar on security best practices and adopted standards (i.e., NIST). 

Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • Bachelor's/master's degree in computer science/Engineering or equivalent experience. 

  • 5+ years of experience in firmware development. 

  • 5+ years of experience in embedded security. 

  • Knowledge of NIST and/or ISO standards and best practices is an asset. 

  • Solid understanding of security protocols, cryptography, authentication, attestation, authorization, secure boot, digital signatures, and certificates. 

  • Experience creating and validating threat models. 

  • Understanding data storage controllers' architectures and RISC-V, HID, I2C, SPI, and UART interfaces is an asset. 

  • Ability to read and understand datasheets, electrical diagrams, hardware specifications, and product requirements documents to assess impact on firmware architecture and design. 

  • Strong analytical, problem solving and creative thinking skills. 

  • Strong commitment to technical quality and proper documentation during all phases of design and development. 

  • Excellent communication skills; interact with suppliers, senior management, and other team members professionally, in writing, in person, and virtually, as necessary. 

  • Ability to interact with a broad cross-section of personnel to explain and enforce security best practices. 

  • Comfortable working in a fast paced, highly collaborative, global, and virtual work environment.

Compensation & Benefits Details

  • An employee’s pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills, ability, knowledge of the job; (3) performance, contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
  • The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in California, Colorado, New York or remote jobs that can be performed in California, Colorado and New York.  This range may be modified in the future.
  • You will be eligible to participate in Western Digital’s Short-Term Incentive (STI) Plan, which provides incentive awards based on Company and individual performance.  Depending on your role and your performance, you may be eligible to participate in our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs) or cash equivalents, pursuant to the terms of the LTI plan.
