Job Description

We are seeking a firmware engineer with a passion in problem solving. As a Senior Firmware Engineer in the Advanced System team, you will be designing, prototyping, and developing new firmware features for revolutionary technology for the next generation of Western Digital Enterprise hard disk drive (eHDD).

WHAT YOU WILL DO

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop firmware using C++ using the latest standards and tools.
  • Perform proof of concept by using a scripting language or C++.
  • Ensure firmware quality for new features by developing unit tests and integration tests.
  • Follow Agile methodologies in development.
  • Create design documents pertinent to the various phases of firmware development while collaborating with all stakeholders.
  • You'll be on a scrum team responsible for full stack embedded firmware development to deliver revolutionary technology for enterprise products. This includes innovation, design, implementation and debug of software algorithms, data structures, logging, and drivers in a complex software environment.
  • Work with cross functional teams to prototype and develop advanced HDD features.
  • Self-motivated to work both unsupervised and as part of an agile team. Collaborate to develop self and others within group.
  • Resolve engineering issues effectively in the development and integration phase.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelors 2+ years experience or Master in CS, CE, EE, EC or equivalent required.
  • Strong knowledge in C++, Object oriented programming, Data Structure, Algorithms, and firmware development/debug tools is required.
  • Strong aptitude and penchant for problem solving, algorithm design, system design, and complexity analysis skills.
  • You have ability to rapidly learn new technologies, complex code and develop system view.
  • You have excellent interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication.
  • You'll be a fun and enthusiastic teammate who enjoys a challenge and celebrates success. An ever positive, can-do attitude.
  • Interest in storage technologies (HDD, Flash, nonvolatile memory) that is the backbone and lifeline of all the technologies (Artificial Intelligence (AI) , Machine Learning (ML), Cloud, Autonomous driving, Social Media, Streaming and entertainment, E-Commerce etc)

 

Preferred

  • Familiarity with micro-controller architecture (ARM), embedded systems.
  • Experience with the latest modern C++ standards (11/14/17/20)
  • Experience in scripting languages like Python, Tcl, Matlab, etc
  • Understanding in magnetic recording, signal processing, and solid statistical analysis skills.

  • An employee’s pay position within the salary range may be based on several factors including but not limited to (1) relevant education; qualifications; certifications; and experience; (2) skills, ability, knowledge of the job; (3) performance, contribution and results; (4) geographic location; (5) shift; (6) internal and external equity; and (7) business and organizational needs.
  • The salary range is what we believe to be the range of possible compensation for this role at the time of this posting.  We may ultimately pay more or less than the posted range and this range is only applicable for jobs to be performed in Colorado or remote jobs that can be performed in Colorado.  This range may be modified in the future.
  • You will also be eligible to participate in Western Digital's Short-Term Incentive (STI) Plan and to receive equity awards under our annual Long-Term Incentive (LTI) program, which consists of restricted stock units (RSUs), pursuant to the terms of these programs.  RSU awards are also available to eligible new hires, subject to Western Digital’s Standard Terms and Conditions for Restricted Stock Unit Awards.
