About the opportunity: 

Also known as a Health Improvement Communications Specialist, you will receive day-to-day direction from the Health Improvement Communications Manager and support the Health Improvement team by creating and delivering clear, accurate communications to support execution of business initiatives. You will assist in developing communications for presentations, Sharepoint content, stories to publicly elevate ongoing programs, etc., using established templates, tools, and processes. In addition, you will regularly include references to data that describes the health of the population in Iowa and South Dakota.

The specialist role, by design, is highly collaborative and focuses on producing unique and compelling communications with attention to detail, coordinating distribution across approved channels, and ensuring messages are clear and easy to follow. While working closely with cross-functional teams you will build foundational relationships and incorporate feedback to improve communication effectiveness. Success leverages following defined processes, meeting deadlines and monitoring basic engagement metrics to continuously strengthen the work and support effective business execution.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, English or relevant area of study, or direct and applicable work experience.
  • 2+ years of communications experience within an organization.
  • Demonstrated ability to write clear, concise, and well-structured communications using proper tone, grammar, and formatting aligned with templates or guidelines
  • Ability to translate basic business information into simple, easy-to-understand messages for a specific audience
  • Strong attention to detail with a focus on accuracy in written communications and materials.
  • Ability to follow established processes, templates, and communication standards with consistency and reliability.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work in a high-volume, fast-paced environment with repetitive and routine communications tasks.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships across teams; open to feedback and willing to learn and improve.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with a professional and collaborative approach.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Familiarity with standard communication tools (e.g., email platforms, intranet systems).
  • Willingness to learn operational communications processes, templates, and channel guidelines.
  • Interest in using basic metrics and feedback to improve communication effectiveness.

Additional Information

What you will do as a Health Improvement Communications Specialist:

a. Provide support to stakeholders in day-to-day activities that includes drafting materials, research, and tool updates.

b. Assist in curated events consisting of facilities and security coordination, and development and planning of specific materials for events.

c. Assist in the development of communications recommendations (e.g. presentations, Sharepoint content, business cases, external stories, etc.) for defined audiences ensuring accuracy, applicability and clarity.

d. Develop communications materials with strong attention to detail that simplifies a narrative and drives behavior change.

e. Coordinate and manage the distribution of messages across approved channels (e.g., email, intranet, via meetings), ensuring alignment with established protocols and timeline expectations.

f. Apply strong writing fundamentals to produce clear, concise messaging and materials; consistently use proper tone, grammar, and formatting aligned with templates, brand standards and communication guidelines.

g. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to support communication needs; build foundational working relationships and incorporate feedback to continuously improve communication effectiveness.

h. Utilize standard communication tools and platforms effectively, adhering to established channel strategies, governance, and best practices.

i. Follow defined communications processes, meet deadlines and quality expectations, and track work using designated tools and systems.

j. Monitor and report on engagement metrics (e.g., email open rates, intranet views); collect employee feedback and apply insights to improve future communications.

k. Other duties as assigned.
