Role Summary/Purpose


The Systems Test Engineer plays a pivotal role in communicating business goals, programs, and processes within a specific area or business segment. In this role, you will leverage your testing experience and development expertise to solve complex problems and develop and execute system-level test objectives for your team. This position has a strong emphasis on systems integration testing and test automation, requiring hands-on experience building and maintaining automation frameworks.

 

You will be responsible for testing systems that integrate cloud, firmware, hardware, and software components, while also contributing to the development of scalable and maintainable automation solutions.

 

Key functions include:

 

  • Test Planning: Develop comprehensive system test plans that cover functionality, performance, reliability, and integration.
  • Test Execution: Conduct thorough end-to-end testing of integrated systems, ensuring all components work seamlessly together.
  • Automation: Design, develop, and maintain automated testing frameworks and reusable libraries (Python-based), using tools such as Squish or similar technologies.
  • Reporting: Generate detailed test reports providing insights into system performance, defects, and improvement opportunities.
  • Problem Solving: Identify, analyse, and resolve complex system issues across multiple domains.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with cross-functional teams including development, firmware, hardware, and product management.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drive improvements in test processes, automation capability, tools, and methodologies.

 

In this role, you will play a critical part in ensuring the reliability, scalability, and performance of complex systems.

 

KEY WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

  • Liaison with other engineering team staff, as required.
  • Liaison with product marketing, customer support staff, and Wabtec end customers, as required.

 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Work collaboratively within the Agile Scrum team.
  • Bring best practice test engineering and automation-first thinking to the team’s work.
  • Analyse system testing needs, and plan, design, create, execute and maintain system-level and automated test solutions.
  • Develop, extend, and maintain automation frameworks and supporting libraries.
  • Contribute strong software development capability (Python preferred) to test systems and tooling.
  • Help the team identify priority issues, assist in root cause analysis, and drive delivery of solutions.
  • Develop and maintain automated tests in our automation testing framework.
  • Contribute towards continuous improvement of testing practices and automation maturity.
  • Liaise with other engineering team members including digital design, RF engineering, software and network management products.
  • Perform other system testing and integration activities as required.

TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

Essential:

  • Strong experience as a systems or integration tester.
  • Experience developing automation using Python.
  • Hands-on experience with test automation tools such as Squish or similar.
  • Experience building or contributing to automation frameworks and reusable test libraries.
  • An understanding of RF, digital electronics and electronics engineering.
  • Knowledge of networking protocols and experience with the associated test equipment.
  • Knowledge of good software development and testing practices.
  • Strong skills in diagnosing problems, troubleshooting and reporting relevant data.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Must demonstrate an understanding of IP networking, including HTTP, HTTPS, SSH, firewalls and routers.
  • Experience in Agile Scrum with proven ability to contribute to teamwork.
    Linux and Android experience.

 

Desirable:

  • At least 5+ years’ experience with software development, test and validation.
  • Source control and issue tracking tools such as Git and Jira.
  • Understanding of digital electronics and wireless technologies.
  • ISTQB and/or Agile Testing (ICP-TST) certification.
  • Experience with communication protocols such as RS232/485, CAN Bus and TCP/IP, and wireless technologies including Bluetooth and WiFi.
  • Experience with GPS and GPS tracking in surveying or telematic applications, including telemetry.
  • Knowledge of mining methods and/or vehicle types.
  • Experience in using protocol analysers, Ethernet analysers, Bit Error Rate testers and other telecommunications and networking test equipment.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND ENVIRONMENT

  • Some travel may be required from time to time (5% or less).

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor's degree in information systems, Information Technology, Computer Science or Computer/ Electronic Engineering. Non-graduates will be considered where a proven track record as an effective test engineer can be provided.
  • Proven experience with system testing and automation development, including hands-on coding.
  • Experience with software development and hands on coding in a variety of high-level programming languages and embedded platform and processors.

Additional Information

The role will be responsible for planning and executing independent system-level testing of Machine Vision based products, maintaining and expanding the test automation framework, developing new test libraries for current and future products, and increasing automated test coverage across the product portfolio.
