Role Summary/Purpose

The Wabtec Data & Analytics (D&A) team is driving the company's next-generation data and analytics ecosystem with a strong focus on Data Democratization, Self-Service, and AI-led innovation. We are seeking a Senior Data Engineer with strong SQL expertise and experience across data engineering, AI, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, and Data Science to enable scalable, governed, and intelligent self-service solutions.

In addition to building and curating trusted datasets, this role will contribute to the development of AI-powered solutions leveraging Microsoft Copilot, Denodo AI SDK, Dataiku, and Agentic AI frameworks to enhance data discovery, analytics, automation, and business decision-making. The candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and supporting advanced analytics, predictive models, intelligent agents, and Generative AI solutions that accelerate business value and operational efficiency.

The ideal candidate combines strong data engineering fundamentals with hands-on experience in Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Generative AI, Large Language Models (LLMs), agent development, and advanced analytics, enabling business users to effectively leverage data and AI capabilities through trusted, self-service platforms and intelligent automation solutions.

 

Essential Responsibilities

As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Partner with D&A leadership and business stakeholders to evolve and execute the Data Self-Service and Data Democratization strategy.
  • Work directly with functional users to understand self-service data needs across data discovery, reporting, analytics, and advanced use cases.
  • Design, build, and curate high-quality datasets to support analytics and reporting use cases, including development of curation tables.
  • Strong Experience in SQL and PL/SQL
  • Create and maintain data documentation, user guides, and standards in SharePoint to promote adoption and consistent usage.
  • Develop and publish logical and physical data models and ER diagrams to support self-service and semantic layers.
  • Collaborate with architecture and emerging technology teams on proof-of-concept evaluations of new data, analytics, and AI platforms.
  • Help assess whether self-service tools are being used correctly, and guide users toward the most effective tools for their use cases.
  • Contribute to self-service design patterns, implementation standards, and roadmaps based on business usage patterns.
  • Ensure self-service solutions meet enterprise requirements for data quality, metadata, semantic consistency, and performance.
  • Work with security, architecture, and platform teams to ensure data access is governed appropriately for business confidential and sensitive data.
  • Support implementation of new and existing standards, processes, and best practices across data engineering and analytics platforms.
  • Participate in architecture discussions and contribute insights on emerging data technologies, tools, and industry trends.
  • Perform in-depth data analysis, data modeling, and data design activities to support business and analytics needs.

 

 

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Minimum 3 years of experience in self-service and analytics platforms including Denodo, Dataiku and Power BI .
  • Hands-on experience with AI platforms (Copilot Studio, AWS Bedrock) for designing and developing intelligent agents and workflow automation
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Systems, Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field from an accredited institution.
  • Hands-on experience or internships in data engineering, data analytics, data warehousing, or business intelligence.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts in clear, business-oriented terms.
  • Working knowledge of data engineering and analytics principles, including data modeling, ingestion, transformation, and semantic layer design.
  • Basic exposure to advanced analytics concepts such as predictive analytics, data mining, or statistical analysis is a plus.
  • Understanding data storage and processing technologies including relational databases, columnar databases, Hadoop or Hive-based platforms.
  • Strong Experience in data modeling concepts and tools such as ERwin or ER Studio.
  • Working knowledge of SQL and familiarity with technologies such as Spark, HiveSQL, Python, R, Sqoop, and JDBC or ODBC connectivity.
  • Understanding data visualization best practices and storytelling through dashboards and reports.

Desired Characteristics

  • Experience working on IT or data projects in collaborative, cross-functional teams.
  • Exposure to information systems design, implementation, or operational support.
  • Familiarity with application development or data platform development concepts.
  • Experience or exposure to data technologies such as Hive, Postgres, MySQL, SQL Server, Hadoop, or NoSQL platforms.
  • Experience with metadata management, data cataloging, or data lineage tools is a plus.
  • Familiarity with cloud-based data platforms and cloud data strategies is a plus.
  • Strong team player with a collaborative mindset and customer-focused approach.
  • Demonstrated analytical and problem-solving skills with clear and structured communication.
  • Ability to anticipate challenges and proactively develop mitigation plans.
  • Change-oriented, with a continuous improvement of mindset and openness to new ways of working.
  • Self-motivated, resourceful, and able to learn new tools and technologies quickly.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with attention to detail and standards.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
