Job Description
Heartland REMC is looking to hire an Engineering/Mapping Technician to maintain the Automated Mapping / Facilities Management/Geographical Information System (AM/FM/GIS) to ensure that the electrical system drawing and engineering analysis model, the associated database and connectivity, and the geographical background are accurate and current. To produce maps, diagrams, drawings, and reports, as needed, using applicable software; including but not limited to ESRI and AutoCAD.
Qualifications
- High School graduate or equivalency required.
- Two-year degree in related field desirable.
- Additional education or training related to automated mapping is recommended.
- Additional education or training related to fundamentals of electricity is desirable.
- Must be proficient with computers and other office equipment.
- Must be capable of and willing to learn new skills.
- Must have good communications, math and keyboarding skills.
- Must have good math skills.
- Must be very conscientious and precise with all associated documents.
A minimum of three (3) years’ experience with the mapping of electrical distribution lines and the use of AutoCAD and/or and ESRI based system to produce the related system maps is recommended. Prefer experience working in the line construction area. Prior experience with RUS standards would be very beneficial.
Essential Responsibility
- Updates and makes corrections to the AM/FM/GIS to reflect any changes made to the electrical system relating to new construction, line conversions, maintenance programs, switching operations, phase changes, etc., to ensure an accurate and current representation of the electrical system.
- Updates and makes changes to the AM/FM/GIS to reflect accurate and current geographical and land base information, including but not limited to highways, roads, lakes, rivers, creeks, wetlands, city limits, town limits, district lines, tax districts, service territories, easements, Board districts, property lines, and developments.
- Performs all work required of the AM/FM/GIS area to ensure that information relating to the service order and work order processes is properly entered into the AM/FM/GIS and accounting and information systems.
- Imports and exports data to and from the AM/FM/GIS to facilitate the sharing of information with other departments, county governments, cities and towns, developers, police departments, fire departments, and other utilities as needed.
- Performs field inspections on overhead and underground lines and equipment to verify the accuracy of the AM/FM/GIS. Updates the system accordingly, and reports discrepancies or hazardous conditions as needed to appropriate personnel.
- Operates Global Positioning System (GPS) equipment in field to attach real-world coordinates to the associated location in the AM/FM/GIS; Imports this data and makes adjustments as needed.
- Posts the proposed system improvements included in the Work Plan, and proposed developments within the company’s service territory, to the proposed layer of the AM/FM/GIS for review by all interested personnel.
- Uses the AM/FM/GIS to maintain all pertinent size, type, assembly, configuration, joint use, and maintenance data on electrical distribution system poles, lines, and equipment and generates related reports as needed.
- Produces maps, diagrams, drawings, and reports using software, plotters, printers, copiers, or other devices as needed.
- Analyzes discrepancies between engineering analysis software, GIS, the billing system, and other applicable software systems. Makes changes as appropriate or brings major inconsistencies to the attention of appropriate personnel.
