Job Description

Provide assistance to line crews of NineStar for the continuity of line service, maintenance, and construction functions of the Cooperative. The Groundman is accountable for developing an expertise in the proper use of all electric utility materials, tools, and special equipment and their functions to be able to provide assistance as a "safety observer" for line crews when working on energized electrical lines. The groundman must also be able to operate all forms of electric utility equipment necessary to assist line crews in performing their duties. This is a bargaining unit position that requires some Holiday, evening, and weekend work. 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Gather, inspect, stock, and load the necessary materials commonly used on a daily basis, trouble tickets, and or emergencies on the vehicle for assignments. 
  • Assist in conducting regular inspections of equipment used by members of the crew. 
  • Record necessary information on time sheets, work orders, and any other source documents.
  • Perform any other task or duties assigned by the operations manager to meet the department and Cooperative's objectives. 

Qualifications

Knowledge of: 

  • The basic key functions of electricity and dealing with induced high voltage. 
  • Possesses a basic knowledge of materials used in line work. 
  • Familiarity of the products and services that NineStar offers.

Ability to: 

  • Communicate with others and is able to assimilate and understand information in a manner consistent with the essential job functions.
  • Acquire and maintain a Class A CDL with Tanker endorsement is required within 180 days. 
  • Work outside of regular scheduled hours to be available for emergency and/or prearranged work. 
  • Must have the physical ability to perform duties required which include but are not limited to working outside in all weather conditions, manually digging holes for utility poles. lifting objects up to 100lbs, flagging traffic, walking in all types of terrain, and clearing the right-of-way of trees. 
  • Ability to understand and follow cooperative maps, cooperative safety manual, work orders, staking sheets, and any type of cooperative forms related to work being performed. 

Education and Experience: 

  • High school Diploma or GED.
  • Experience in operating equipment, such as a digger derrick truck, bucket trucks, chain saws, and other construction or maintenance related equipment. 
  •  First aid and CPR certified or the ability to obtain.

Operations policy states all trades and crafts employees who are subject to “call-in” duty must reside (bonafide residence) within the perimeters of NineStar service territory. (15 miles radius from 2243 E Main St, Greenfield, IN 46140)
