Key Role:

WSP is committed to a culture driven by safety, quality and continuous improvement. Primarily the role requires a strong background of Mine Closure costing/engineering with excellent communication skills. The key responsibility is to function as a Mine Closure Consultant within the Mine Closure team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Developing an appropriate understanding of the closure context of various types of mines and industrial sites.
  • Interpreting site observations to assist in conceptualising closure scenarios and articulating these to be site specific.
  • Interpreting aerial imagery, engineering drawings and general arrangement drawings to accurately measure and calculate quantities for the purposes of closure cost assessment and capturing these in the closure costing Bills of Quantity in a consistent and accurate manner.
  • Utilising a working knowledge of AutoCAD, Google Earth PRO and related software packages to compile reference maps that comply with the relevant regulatory and/or internal WSP standards.
  • Consulting and collaborating with other specialists within and external to WSP to provide technical input to specific aspects of closure planning, for example devising closure criteria/measures for waste residue facilities and contaminated land, surface rehabilitation, or treatment of excess mine water make.
  • Compiling and integrating reports, spreadsheets and drawings into a final product; and
  • Making project decisions with appropriate direction from senior staff, and in turn managing junior staff to execute specific tasks.

  • Contributing to the identification of SHEQ risks and driving processes to achieve Zero Harm

Qualifications and Experience Required:

  • BTech/BEng degree in mining/environmental engineering; or
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) or Bachelor of Technology (B. Tech) in Quantity Surveying; or
  • Landscape Architect (BScLArch, BL(Hons) or ML(Prof); or
  • BSc(Hons) degree (preferably spatial/geographical sciences).
  • Minimum five years’ relevant experience in compilation of mine rehabilitation and closure plans, conducting closure costs/asset retirement obligation assessments, with additional experience in related environmental management aspects a bonus;
  • Advanced use of MS Excel is a prerequisite;
  • Proficient use of Google Earth Pro; MS Word; MS PowerPoint; and other Microsoft Office applications;
  • Capability in the use of MS Projects would be beneficial but not essential; and

Job Experiences:

Knowledge of WSP Africa systems and procedures

Other requirements: 

  • Driver’s licence is a prerequisite; and
  • Valid passport and willingness to travel abroad.

Key Competencies and Generic Skills:

Demonstrable numerical ability and closure costs experience is a must, as well as an entrenched knowledge of the mining and industrial sectors in South Africa and Africa, particularly within the field of rehabilitation and closure. Other competencies include:

  • Ability to deal with multiple-level cost worksheets.
  • Strong technical writing capability.
  • Spatial and three-dimensional thinking and planning ability.
  • Strong mathematical and analytical skills.
  • Experience in dealing with clients and acting as the key company representative.
  • Regularly interacts and makes decisions with appropriate directions from direct line of report and senior project managers.
