Working Student - Thermal Battery Design Engineer (m/f/d)

  • Part-time
  • Site: Munich
  • Department: Students

Company Description

Here at Volocopter, we are the pioneers of electric air taxis (electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft - eVTOLs). We have pledged to bring sustainable urban air mobility to life by getting electric air taxis off the ground in a way that complements existing transportation options in megacities across the globe. In 2011 we carried out the first-ever crewed flight of a fully electric multicopter and have since conducted more than 2,000 public and private test flights across the world (www.volocopter.com).

Job Description

Your crew during this flight:

You will be part of the Mechanical Engineering team based in Munich, working on the Next Generation aircrafts. The team consists of engineers and working students with different backgrounds (aerodynamics, mechanical design, stress analysis, EPUs/ESUs…) and it´s working close with other teams, like Flight Control, Electronics, Flight Testing, etc. This makes it a great place where to grow as an engineer, working side by side with professionals from different fields and experience a variety of tasks, while following the entire path from sketches to a flying prototype.

Your mission during this flight:

Within a highly motivated, multi-disciplinary core team you will work under the direct supervision of the Aircraft Architect and Energy Storage System Engineer supporting design of the next generation battery packs. You will be responsible for various thermal and electrical simulations related to both battery and aircraft development. You will iterate between the simulation and design providing critical information for the aircraft concept development. Furthermore, you will make hands-on experience by supporting the manufacturing and testing of the physical components.

  • You will perform hand calculations to analyze basic thermal and electrical performance of the battery system
  • You will build simple MATLAB models to represent thermo-electrical battery behavior
  • You will be responsible for pre-processing of the CAD model for CFD simulations (Airtight geometry, meshing, part definition, grid convergence and other related tasks)
  • You will setup and execute the thermal CFD model using Star CCM+
  • You will analyze the CFD simulations (extract information/data/images/plots)
  • You will investigate battery thermal-runaway performance according to the SC-VTOL certification
  • You will prepare and present simulation reports to all interested stakeholders
  • You will perform simulation studies to guide the battery and aircraft development

Qualifications

Check in your professional skills:

  • You are a Bachelor or Master student in the field of mechanical or aerospace engineering (with the focus on thermodynamics / aerodynamic)
  • Experience with student projects will be an advantage (i.e. Formula student)
  • Academical/professional knowledge of battery design (on both cell and module/pack level)
  • Good understanding of thermodynamics and computational fluid dynamics principles
  • Proven experience with Star CCM+, preferably thermal analysis (internships, curricular projects, or any other working experience)
  • Basic knowledge of Matlab will be an advantage
  • Hands-on experience with electronic / battery components will be a benefit
  • Availability to work for 20 h/week on site from August 2024 for at least 6 months
  • Eligibility to work in Germany as a student
